‘Scrap Paper’ is a bold, display typeface inspired by the theme of compression. The letterforms were created from drawings of a distorted alphabet, formed by screwing up each letter printed onto a piece of paper, hence the name. The scrunched up type make for a ‘grunge’ feel, perfect for a large format, yet still visible when used at a smaller size.

"Blimey!" is a typeface inspired by the 1970s Punk movement- paying notice to the political, economical and social issues of the time and how they affected what we commonly refer to as the “Punk Aesthetic”. Ransom note lettering, stencils, silkscreen printing and the appropriation of current cultural imagery aided the movement to deliver its important message of rebellion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Starting off with the theme "Dangerous", my focus for this project drifted to the definitions of both “rebellion” and “anarchy”. This naturally led me to the Punk movement and how it’s graphic style has been adopted into contemporary design practice. These graphics were often rough, raw, weathered and distressed- all of which I’ve tried to incorporate into my own type’s design. Ironically, the fact that this “style” is being used for commercial gain goes against the very foundations of Punk itself. This realisation spurred on the font’s name Blimey!, an ironic expression that is perhaps the furthest away from punk itself. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This typeface would be best utilised in consideration to posters, flyers and possibly book covers (providing the content matches the attitude of the font). This font was inspired by the works of Christophe Szpajdel (Lord of the Logos, 2010, Die Gestalten Verlag), as well as by the film trilogy and the following game titles (e.g. Middle-earth: Shadows of Mordor, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, 2014) based on Tolkien's epic masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings. Given the game theme, and the 48 bricks vertical limit, I thought more or less around pixel art, or pixel fonts. This is my endeavour to make a spiky blackletter in Szpajdel's black metal style that evokes the terror of Mordor at pixel level. This font has been extensively tested for best kerning, yet some issues might have remained unresolved.

Based on disintegration, this font represents many forms of decay. It also appears like tea-stains on paper, giving it a very worn look. Despite this, the font is structured around helvetica and the letterforms remain recognisable and readable. The font is designed to be decorative and to be use selectively, for bold and attention grabbing headers, and not for large pieces of text. Think poster for your local rubbish tip! (or of a similar vibe).

This san serif, textured, bold font is inspired by the old cast iron type on train carts. When I discovered the old train carts down at the 'Bristol Harbour Railway' I was fascinated by these incredible forms. To create the structure of these characters I worked from one of the rubbings I took of a particularly nice iron plate and then scanned it into the computer to replicate the letters which where missing. I then printed this on to graph paper and transferred the bricks one by one to try and get the most accurate representation as possible.This is a clone

This is the second of two typefaces that I have created in response to a brief set in my first term studying Graphic Design at UWE Bristol. My chosen theme for the six week project was decay. I decided to create two fonts, an original and a decayed version. I took inspiration from photos I took of graffiti and tagging around Bristol. For this specific font I was inspired by the way graffiti changes and breaks down over time. An improvement of the former (Headless/Tangle, now called Tangled Hairline); This version is bolder and simpler with more striking 'chaos motion' lines. This version is perhaps more decorative looking than the original and definitely more ordered in the sense of the letterforms to enable usability.This is a clone

This typeface has been created based on the theme 'Vibration'. I tried out a wide range of experimentation when it came to producing hand rendered work, as I felt I needed to work out what would best capture the general sense of the word. I tried using inks on elastic bands, attaching pens to a playstation controller and drawing, photographing food colouring over a speaker; all sorts. Finally, I decided I needed something which really reflected the word clearly. I looked at the white noise and the trails that you get on the television, and applied this feel to a sans serif font I had made based on Georgia (minus the Serifs) One of the most time comsuming things I've ever done, hope its been worth it. Any comments welcome.This is a clone

By researching the meaning of chaos, I came across the chaos theory, which describes the movement of unpredictability. My font is based on a diagram that explains the movement of chaotic systems. The design of the typeface is based upon helvetica, a clearly legible font over which i added the circular movement seen from the diagram. My typeface has an element of fun and could be used to promote a relaxing product or experience by using a contrasting idea; chaos. It could also be used to promote electronic music; record labels, album covers, in particular rave or club nights. This typeface literally causes havoc with your systems; for a more usable, bolder version try Tangle.

Font based on the theme of decay. I started by looking at the decaying buildings, working from photographs of tired brick and worn surfaces. I made some rubbings from text on the side of a building and this is what the main font outline is based on. I wanted to create a worn font, with an almost burnt texture to replicate the worn and disintegrating buildings I started with. The name comes from text on the side of a building and I think the textures of decay can be beautiful.This is a clone

This is my first attempt to use fontstruct, which is a project given to me during my first year of studying graphic design at UWE; Bristol. Initially the typeface was inspired by the product of organic decay. I cut out strawberries, apples and tomatoes in the shape of letters and left them to decay on a sheet of paper. When removing them, they left an interesting stained mark on the paper which I used as my basis for the letter forms. Latterly I have used the typeface "Hobo Std" as inspiration because of it's curvaceous body and similarity to the remaining marks of the fruit and vegetables. It is a display font having because of it's better readability on larger sizes. This due to the stained effect as well as the letters are bold. This is a clone

This is my first fontstruction, based on the theme of 'sharp'. In early development stages I looked at brambles and attempted to create a typeface that seemed naturally pointed, as opposed to industrially sharp. Also took cues from modern death metal typography. Currently no numbers or lower case due to time constraints. Any feedback would be appreciated!This is a clone

This is a font that i have designed and created as part of a project given in the first term of my first year doing Graphic Design at UWE. The initial theme for my project was "Decay" where I researched different types of rotting, erosion and decay of quality in every day objects. I then came to look at crumbling brick walls and developed my font from there. I've tried to show a lack in defined edges and emphasise a crumbled, smudgey typeface. I think it could be used as a relatively playful font,but could have strong impact if used for communicating the idea of decay or decompositon. This is a bold font, meant to be used big! Feel free to comment or discuss !

This technique certainly has the potential for more than this, but right now I don't have the time for experimenting a lot. But how about using it for a handwriting-on-rough-paper font?
