Based on a font that I made years back, this “Reverse” contest has been a good excuse to revisit that project and fine tune the letters heavily. Here the challange has been using a single brick, in the case the arrow pointing back, and making the shapes bold and (ok, you have to squeez your eyes a little) legible.

I have made a font with International Maritime Signal Flags before, but this time they are coloured correctly (in grey scale). White is blank ( ), yellow is little dots (::), red is 33% diagonals (\\), blue is 50% diagonals (//), black is filled. Lower case letters are the patterns with no colouring, for those who want to colour in the fields themselves.

I have now added numbers. The regular numerals (0-9) are the square NATO flags, and the subscript numerals (₀₋₉) are the templates of the NATO number flags. The roman numerals (I-X, X representing 0) are the longer ICS flags, and the lower case roman numerals (i-x) are the uncoloured ICS flags.

On top of that there are four substitute flags, which can be found in the superscript numbers (¹⁻⁴) and the fifth fractions (⅕-⅘).

This fs was started in January 2012. I didn't remember that of course, I just checked the created date. Similarly, who-the-fun can remember what the inspiration was for it. All I know is that it has gone through many iterations to reach this state. It only uses the one square brick but oh so many of them. Even though all it contains are straight lines, still a pain to build brick by square brick. I am so glad it is over. I will not be doing much more than this on it. Bye bye, Build. Really excited to be able to share this fontstruction, as it was developed as the display font for a group exhibition in Dublin's Temple Bar Gallery + Studios. A kerned version (slightly tweaked using Glyphs) can be downloaded for free through the gallery website.

Only lowercase and minimal punctuation for now...not enough time for a complete set. The lowercase characters can be layered on the uppercase to get different colored outlines and slashes. The uppercase contains the characters as the outlines and the internal slashes. The lowercase contains the characters as just the outlines. The punctuation has the outline only version on the it's key and the slashed version on the SHIFT + key. For example, 2 contains the outline version of @ and SHIFT + 2 contains the slashed version of the @.

As usual, this is not what I set out to do. But it had merit of its own, so, as usual, what the heck principle was internally said and employed.

Uses only the square brick.

With only 45° cuts, this fs was not as clear-cut as evident. Much -fun- pains were staked to get things to line-up and combine and gel and connect and whatnot.

There are two types of connectors: internal and external. These can be used to connect letters together at the second rhombus level for external connectors and third rhombus level for internal connectors. Furthermore, each connector comes in horizontal and vertical variants. All connectors have a zero width, meaning typing any does not advance the character. This allows for connectors to be placed betwixt letters without manual adjustment. Further-furthermore, the horizontal and vertical connectors can be stacked one-on-top-of-another for a heavier connector action. Further-further-furthermore, there are larger connectors available for tricky letters with extra gaps, such as the T. Each of the larger connectors have the same properties as the smaller connectors. Further-further-further-furthermore, the larger connectors have 1×2 and 2×2 options. There's a little bit of system to this madness. Once you start typing, it starts to become second-nature quite quickly.

Then there are the heavier grills that come in 1, 2, 3 or 4 column varieties. All grills are negative widths, meaning typing any stacks the grill over the previous letters, without advancing the character forward. Furthermore, a four column half grill is available which makes a faux 3D effect.

A randomness of vertical clear columns is also provided to separate or segregate or isolate or something any single or multiple glyphs.

this typeface is adapted from one of the culture in Indonesia (PAPUA), especially the shield. papua is a wonderful place it's still close to nature, that's why I'm choosing it as my inspiration of this typeface.
