I made this for the last project of my 3rd year as a Graphic Design student at Manchester School of Art (MSoA), which we were briefed to make a display font based on a building of our choice. I chose the brutalist building called The Cultural Centre of the Philippines (CCP), and based the name of the typeface, Sining, which refers to creative expressions such as painting, music, dance, literature, and other artistic activities. It encompasses both the aesthetic rules of art and the creative process itself. Which the building itself is about promoting Filipino arts and culture.

I've emphasised this top-heavy weight distribution with thin stems (with some exclusions) across the letters since the building was designed to have this "floating volume" style by Leandro V. Locsin (Filipino architect). 

It's my first time creating a typeface ever, so please leave any of your thoughts below and let me know any advice for any future type projects I make :)

Inspiration struck me at work when I was marking a set of used tires with the name of its owner. Different tire treads force one to write in peculiar ways in order for the text to be legible when searching our tire storage. The essence of "Backbone" was born due to this limitation. Created on the philosophy of being reliant on a far-left line (the proverbial "backbone") and revolving around it as much as possible. Other important themes and limitations are 45 & 90 degree angles, brutalism, and the numbers 7 & 13. However, aesthetics take priority, so you may very well see some broken rules. Intended as a display font, not all elements are fully legible and some characters don't play nice with each other. What else do you expect from a bunch of sharp points?

Nothing bad came out of vertical! 

Skyscrapers, bar charts, bamboo, humans, trees, columns, rockets, we've spent life on the up.

So why not our fonts? Well, now you can!

A variation of the classic Atari ST 8x16 bitmap font, keeping to the original grid but allowing 45 degree bricks to depixelize the feel while keeping the blockiness.

Agressive, violent, fat and edgy, meet F² Blok, the newest addition to the Futrey Fonts family! Inspired by the Noisia logo, Blok is a heavyweight — big, blocky shapes with sharp angles that refuse to play nice. It’s not subtle. It doesn't need to be.

My font is based on the Ministry of Transportation building in Georgia. The building itself is inspired by Japanese Metabolism architecture. Which is a moventment inspired by growth and adapabilty. I wanted my font to feel as though you could stack and change it just like Metabolism architecture.

The letterform for the д came to me in a sudden burst of inspiration.

-" Constructivism's central idea is that human learning is constructed, that learners build new knowledge upon the foundation of previous learning" Phillips, 1995.

This is my first Construction based on the theme of "Rebirth". I chose this theme as I wanted to investigate how a country is "reborn" after a war or a revolution. This led me to read an article about graphic design ideas that came from the Russian Revolution. One of them was Constructivist typography-combination of contrasting shapes and sizes. I looked at the work of El Lissitzky and Alexander Rodchenko. From this research I began to cut out shapes of different sizes and began to construct letters- however, this idea didn't translate well in FontStruct. To widen my research, I looked at Constructivist and Soviet Brutalist architecture which my font was inspired by. It reflects buildings like the Polytechnic Institute of Minsk, The Palace of Ceremonies, and the Georgian Ministry of Highways in Tbilisi.

This font was a response to the theme 'community' and focused on the Birmingham based womxn skate group "Brum Girl Skate". I looked at the structure of skateparks and reflected the curves and flowing arches found in these ramps and bowls. I also explored concrete as a skatepark material and incorporated it's association to Brutalism. This contrasting, combination of brutalist, angular geometry and the movement and flow of skatepark structures created Brutal Bab!

Concrete Honesty is a font based on brutalist architecture:

My aim was to create a set of letters that emulated brutalism’s raw and unpretentious honesty while still conveying the large scale and uncompromising structure brutalist architecture hold. I wanted each letterform to feel grounded with a strong foundation like the building designs.

The font makes use of bold shapes/surfaces and corners as I tried to find balance between asymmetric design of brutalist architecture and the consistency of a legible typeface.

A display font inspired by brutalist architecture and 3D concrete forms in built up city centres. Designed to give a sense of scale and weight.
