This is Chicken Lickin'. It was inspired by the word Lurid and follows an odd train of thought back to my year 5 teacher. She would always wear lurid clothing and a nickname I had at the time was 'Chicken legs' which came from the parents of the football team I played for in my youth, Clapham Colts.
My first brief I received for Graphic Design at UWE was based on the theme "Wicked". Through lots of studies of branches, dead trees, witches and "Wicked" things. I developed a serif font with branchlike and natural features which resemble a spooky forest like in fairy tales. Many references can be linked to Disney movie fonts like Alice in Wonderland.
This font was created around the theme of 'elegant'. I chose to focus on the elegance of flowing fabric and drapery, so designed these letters inspired by classical depictions of fabric in paintings and marble sculptures.
Please note this is an uppercase font so will only work when typing in capitals.
This is a cloneOIL RIG is based on the theme "destructive" particulary with regards to environmental destruction. I based my font on the structure of oil rigs; I think they have sense of beauty about them, but behind that there is a sinister note, as they are facilitating the human led destruction of our planet.
The extraction of oil for the manufacture of products such as plastic, is having a detrimental effect on our planet. Oil spills eradicate marine communities, and plastic products pollute our oceans. This is an issue which I feel needs more attention.
UPPERCASE DISPLAY FONT
This font explores the configuration of bubble forms. The font was inspired by markmakings of ink bubbles which imprinted onto a surface, rather than bubbles floating in the air. I have involved lots of depth and tonality into the font, which, despite bubbles being quite a soft concept, gives it a very dark and heavy feel. The outcome also contains a very digital feel, due to the small scale I worked with.
The font was inspired by runic lettering and was taken from the theme unstable. sticks were used as the main shapes to create the typeface, to give this typeface a weak breakable feeling. I wanted to show a balancing act in the type to display the theme and give it a sense of unease.

This is a cloneThis font was created around the theme of systematic. My main source of inspiration was from symbols used on weather maps and glyphs used for the shipping forcast. Using five main symbols, I created my own set of rules in order to place each symbol at the correct place on my fontstruction.
Currently studying graphic design at UWE Bristol this is my first FonstStruct attempt, creating a typeface based on the theme ‘Rebirth’. After mind mapping all the ideas that sprang to mind when hearing this theme, the idea of our spiritual centre and specifically the seed of life, sacred geometry and recurring patterns in our universe stood out to me as subjects I wanted to explore.
After overlaying various sacred geometry over each other, to find similarities and differenced, specifically focusing on trying to unite the masculine and feminine attributes of the shapes, I started to draw and create my own recurring patterns.
Through research into existing religious script and spiritual fonts I found inspiration from the harsh angles uniting with soft curves. I started to create my own font building blocks and by creating my own bricks on FontStruct to create both my letters and recurring pattern which I placed within my letters to symbolise the sacred geometry and roots at the centre of all our lives.
Based on the theme of rebirth, ‘Fill in the blanks’ draws inspiration from the Renaissance era. Looking at the original printing press, traditional blackletter and Renaissance calligraphy, ‘Fill in the blanks’ offers a modern twist on some of the oldest typefaces to date. By looking at the brush strokes of blackletter and the serifs used in the printing press typefaces, this font is a combination of these characteristics. By using just these features the human eye can still recognise the letter form, essentially allowing your mind to ‘Fill in the blanks.’
This a typeface designed to echo the shapes and patterns found across manholes which cover our network of systems across the UK. Manhole covers have been beautifully decorated with patterns but also act as indicators and safety features. Both patterns and the shaping of letterforms are inspired by manhole covers I have found. Designed to be a display typeface at large scales!
This font is based on the word 'systematic'. I started looking at more digital fonts, for example, the font on your average digital alarm clock, but i moved towards glitches, finding a way to make a glitch font exciting, i looked at glitches in screens but that's been done hundreds of times. I thought about human glitches such as memory loss, i researched alzheimer's and dimentia and got a lot of inspiration from that. Forgetica- a play on words.
My first fontstruction, created for a project at UWE for the theme "squishy". I was inspired by the consistency of food products, especially bubblegum. To create these letters, I created 3D bubblegum letters by chewing and stretching the gum and sticking it on paper. I based this font off these 3D letters. It looks better zoomed out. I hope you like it!
My first fontstruction was inspired by Eastern Art at the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery. I loved the dragon decoration on the old ceramic pots in this section and have tried to portray a similar theme in my letters. (work in progress)
Concrete Honesty is a font based on brutalist architecture:
My aim was to create a set of letters that emulated brutalism’s raw and unpretentious honesty while still conveying the large scale and uncompromising structure brutalist architecture hold. I wanted each letterform to feel grounded with a strong foundation like the building designs.
The font makes use of bold shapes/surfaces and corners as I tried to find balance between asymmetric design of brutalist architecture and the consistency of a legible typeface.
This font was originally inrpired by the word "Unstable". From that word i began to look at multiple unstaible chratcters. I chose to then focus on the new Joker film and the new character joaquin Phoenix had created. The font used for the Joker advertisment, was really impressive however, I fehlt as though it didnt really portray his character well. This font was a way for me to better illustrate The Joker's new character. First I created a very comic block letter that would containe a scratchy "unstable" letter.
This typeface was created with a ‘Protect’ theme and I’ve chosen nature, what we see everyday. I made a mind map about nature and focused on trees, because lots of trees were cut down illegally. My main intention was to remind people about this interference. I sketched a various style to resembles the human interference to trees. Every alphabet has their own human interfere with a little bit sense of Serif, because what I see from trees are elegant and strong.
This font relates to the theme "Sharp" and is inspired by Cubist architecture. Cubist architecture is very rare and can be found only in The Czech Republic, especially in Prague. I took a core element of Cubist architecture, the triangle, and implemented it into a font. I divided each letter into sections and used different shades to make it look like decorative elements of a Cubist facade.

This is a clone of STACKEDThis is my fonstruct, my letters are based on the words and themes of Filth and Obscenity. I was inspired by instagram models, life drawing and delicate fabric. I was influenced by body shapes, delicacy of satin and the detail of patterns found at the hem of the womens underwear. I wanted to subvert the image of filth with something more elegant and fine.
Distressed is an uppercase font focusing on the theme destruction. Within this element I looked more specifically at mental health and how social media has an affect on our mental wellbeing. I created a cracked and distressed effect on each individual letter to visually express the pressure and insecurity we can experience from social media.
My fontstruct is based on the theme of theatre. The designs were achieved from my observations of some theatres in Bristol, as well as further research online. The main inspiration came from the achitecture around the stage curtains, which then lead me to a more art-deco style appoach.
HIGH SOCIETY
This font was created based originally on the word 'Gregarious'. From that I researched Social Housing in the UK. These are spaces designed to house many people for as cheap as possible. I used compound blocks to create complex detailed flats that stack up as high as a tower block usually would.
The industrial revolution gave rise to mass manufacturing; whereby machinery replaced humans, and production snowballed. Textiles were being produced at a rapid speed and in vast quantity, and it was also a pivotal time for print - with the fist linotype machine being invented at around 1883. Mechanised printing meant that newspapers' expansion paralleled the rising population. 'Strength' is a typeface inspired by the widespread industrialisation. The sans serif and square letterforms are a reference to the vast number of red brick factories being erected - the square shape of the font mirroring the literal building blocks.
I created Pixel Volume Two through exploring the theme of ‘Systematic’. I researched different systems in relation to my theme, and eventually came across gaming systems. Specifically looking at retro game design, I began exploring the application of the pixel form/square shape in fonstruct. I explored both serif and sans serif outcomes, creating a full typeface for both styles, however I felt the sans serif outcome fit the theme better.
For this project I was given the word "systematic" as inspiration. I looked into the imagery within the chinese military, looking at how the ordering and the syncronisity created an almost optical illusion effect. Because of this the military force looks more powerful than it may actually be, which is something I was intrested in capturing in my font. The typeface is rigid, geometric, and sans-serif.
This is a clone of Formation QB (first draft)As a first year Graphic Design student at UWE, I have made my first attempt at a fonstruction, creating a font based around the theme of 'rebirth'. I have researched and explored the Japanese art form: Kintsugi which involves the restoration of broken pottery through connecting the broken parts with liquid gold, creating something new and unique. This art form allows us to embrace the beauty of flaws and imperfection, and through each letter I have attempted to recreate the rough, jagged lines of the broken pottery, and the cracks of 'gold' which bind them together (shown through the white lines). Any comments/advice would be really appreciated.
Following the theme "protect" my typeface is based off something one might want to protect themselves from - spiders. I have tried to imitate spiders legs through this font to create an unnerving "feel" about it.
My font was created with the idea of mess and chaos in mind with each letter having a different 'contents'
It is supposed to represent something similar to pin and string art. The white dots representing the pins and the lines within representing the string. It might come across as a little complicated or hard to distinguish each letter however I think it gives it an authentic look.
This font was designed around the theme of 'Dangerous'. It was inspired by fencing I documented around Bristol. I mainly used photos I took from around Clifton & industrial estates as a referenc as the designs majorly differed and I wanted to intertwine these differences to create a universal font that can reflect this. Regardless of design of fencing in each area - the ultimate purpose is to keep you out of their property.
