Working under the theme of 'Rebirth', I have focused my first font on the idea of post-war architecture, or otherwise commonly known as modernist/brutalist architecture. Buildings constructed following the Second World War were built using new technologies of construction. These types of designs were known for their use of modern materials such as concrete and steel as well as their interesting geometrical forms. I was heavily influenced by the architecture featured in Owen Hopkins' book 'Lost Futures' which looks at the disappearing architecture of post-war Britain and how changing external contexts played a role in the subsequent destruction of these buildings.
This font was inspired by an old card series my mother produced quite a few years ago, based around the zodiac signs.
The theme behind this font was “rebirth”, in the sense of giving new life to something long forgotten. The cards themselves were quite popular at the time, so I felt this was an appropriate response to the theme.
The main difference within this set is the chosen challenge to not incorporate large curves or angles through the glyph set, giving the font a style of its own whilst still drawing inspiration from the original. The final outcome was something I would associate with computers, showing the change away from traditional type drawing to the modern age.
This font was created around the theme of community. I thought about different meanings of community, considering groups in close proximity. This led me to look at seed migration that eventaully led to fairy rings, also known as mushroom rings. I constructed this alphabet to work as a group, fitting together like mushrooms in a fairy ring.
As a first year graphic design student at UWE this is my first attempt at creating a typeface on Fontstruct based around the theme of ‘hope’. Looking at this theme I explored the words; dream, desires and wishing leading me to the classic phrase, ‘when you wish upon a star’ and have therefore, based my typeface on stars. Through research, I looked at the patterns and layouts of star constellations to find that they are only made up of straight lines and circles, which is why I have formed a simple lettering using only these two basic forms, incorporating the concept of star constellations.
As a first year Graphic Design student at UWE, I have made my first attempt at a fonstruction, creating a font based around the theme of 'rebirth'. I have researched and explored the Japanese art form: Kintsugi which involves the restoration of broken pottery through connecting the broken parts with liquid gold, creating something new and unique. This art form allows us to embrace the beauty of flaws and imperfection, and through each letter I have attempted to recreate the rough, jagged lines of the broken pottery, and the cracks of 'gold' which bind them together (shown through the white lines). Any comments/advice would be really appreciated.
A block, graffiti inspired, font with sprays of imperfection and an urban aesthetic. The letters are structured equal in width and length and are all designed in capital. The graphic elements both inside and outside the typeface enhance a "technologically programmed" (pixelated) feel to the overall font.
This is a theme developed from "Rebirth", a kind of new extraterrestrial typeface style living on Mars.
I was influenced by graphic and typeface designer Wim Crouwel, with a simple structure and a mixture with another typeface from the game Wolfenstein, avoiding additional strokes.
It also resembles a kind of domino.

My intention with this font was to link it to "Rebirth", so I thought about computer viruses. I looked into glitches and how they distort and warp the computer to such an extent that you'd have to reboot your computer. In other words, the Rebirth of your computer.
For my chosen theme Community (specifically biological community)
I decided to work with a worm/snake shape. Trying to figure out the final letter shapes during the creative process I got inspired by the snake game I'm sure everyone played on their old Nokia including me.
I observed the snake's movements in the game and created a typeface based on that. I would characterize my typeface as a simple combination of retro and modern at the same time.
Created by Nicole Rybáková as a first-year graphic design student at UWE Bristol Uni.
A fun and energetic ornamental typeface based on the theme "community". Inspired by the pictograms of Otl Aicher and the isotype of Otl Nuerath, creating simplified figures. When words are typed, the people join together to make a community.
The theme for my typeface is rebirth, specifically within nature. Upon research I found myself really interested in natures patterns formed through rebirth, be it shown through roots or a plant shooting out into light. I wanted to recreate an abstract version of this through my typeface, to give the illusion of growth.
In response to the topic of, 'Protect', my design was influenced by the net bags used to hold fruit. I was intrigued by the pattern and textures that these made so wanted to created a typeface focusing in on this.
Here is my first fontstruction coming to you from a graphic design student at UWE Bristol.
This font is based around the theme 'rebirth' and to me rebirth means growth, open-minded, seeing the world in new ways- an awakening.
So I went down the path of spiritual journeys. Throughout lockdown I have been listening to the one and only, Joe Rogan and his podcasts. Many of which discuss the topic of psychedelics and how they have changed peoples perspectives on life - positively. I then took these topics and found my 'Rebirth'
This font represents; psychedelics, trance and being in the state of stupor...
This font is inspired by padlocks and the notches in the metal loops. It was inspired by the idea of protection. I made the font thick and bold to represent the solidity of a padlock and to reflect the theme of protection.
This fontrusction was created for the theme 'community'. Titled, 'Social Bubble' I aimed to represent how Covid-19 has affected our social lives. The reason for the different styles for each letter is to express how everyone's situation is different, however I did keep some consistency for aesthetic purposes. The bitmap style also represents how social interaction has become more digital due to people not being able to see each other face to face.
This is my first typeface as a first-year graphic design student at UWE. It has been created based on the theme ''Rebirth''. Inspired by the Renaissance which means ''rebirth'' in French the typeface is a transition from the old to the new. It is also connected to moon phases as a symbol of rebirth and change. The typeface is a combination of sharp elements and smooth shapes, has some futuristic and traditional motifs. Each letter is unique and can be used by itself or in a text with the others. Any comments are welcomed.
My objective with this typeface was to link it to "Rebirth," so I imagined anything related to rebirth. When they die in games, they can respawn or gain a heal before dying. I looked into healing potions and potential futuristic inspirations, and how they distort and warp the system to the point where you'd have to resurrect. In other terms, life's rebirth.
The paths we take in life! By Kacper Cyckowski
My font is based off of paths, the sense of community leads from the directions we all take as individuals. I made a font that shows a personal journey, the road that we take, as individuals are very unique.
This typeface was galvanized from the word 'protect', with the letters made up of spikes influenced by the spikes on the skin of animals such as hedgehogs and porcepines which protect them from predators, and the spikes on plants which protect them in the same way.
