Mata Kain ('cloth pattern'; mata 'eye', kain 'fabric') is a script designed to write Tutur Tenggelar, a linguistic purism project based on Indonesian and Malay without loanwords and without neologisms. As such, the script only has glyphs for native sounds, excluding the sounds /e o/ which are merged with <i u> respectively.
Each "pattern" contains a whole syllable, made up of an initial consonant on the left side, a vowel "thread" inside the pattern, and a final consonant on the left side. A null consonant glyph is used when a syllable begins with no consonant; the same applies when a syllable ends with an open final.
Beside two punctuations for a short and long pause (corresponding to Latin comma and dot), there are also two signs for reduplications. The first sign denotes regular full reduplication (e.g. anak-anak & berbisik-bisik), while the second sign denotes special reduplication (e.g. sayur-mayur & kayu-kayan). There are also additional glyphs used for decorative purposes, as the script is designed not to be written, but instead woven into fabric and clothing. These decorative glyphs are meant to be written uniformly, separate from the ones used to write the actual language.
In typing, initials are typed with their corresponding lowercase Latin alphabet letters, safe for some glyphs which will be listed below. The same applies with the vowels. Finals are typed with the corresponding uppercase Latin alphabet letters, again with some exceptions.
