I was a little bit bored, and this is what happened. The name is because I have no idea what the origin is, and it's a little ugly.

this is great. so simple, yet it has a wonderful brush stroke feel. swirls can easily be imagined where you place circle bricks. although it could be used as text, the joy here is viewing this at a larger size and marveling at the artistry and craftsmanship. very nice.

Some cracking letters. Really love the S,g,k. Not sure bout the G's leg though.
Comment by djnippa 10th June 2010
Very cool. It has almost an Art Nouveau Faux Oriental look to it.
Comment by LexKominek 10th June 2010
I also like this design. Can you add numbers to this font?
Comment by jimhv 10th June 2010
I honestly wasn't expecting many positive comments on this, thanks.

I've altered the G, added numbers and tweaked a few other letters to make averything a little more cohesive.

Following Penkala, this is another nice font with some smart solutions. Your glyphs look so effortless and natural. It would deserve a decent demo pic. 10/10
Comment by Frodo7 10th June 2010
Perhaps half decent.

Each new time I look at this font I like her more. Perhaps some glyphs might be a little more stylized, but the set works very well together at short distances. Are you planning to add other, more to the font (@, #,%, &, ",, N, C, accented vowels, etc.)? It would be very rewarding, please.

This is really good. My faves are the e, g, and y.

Excellent.

My only (teeny) quibble is with the sharp angles on the M and W ... they stand out against the other more sinuous glyphs. Still gets a 10 though :)

Any chance of some more European characters on this one i.e. öäüÖÄÜß etc. ?
Comment by Rob Meek (meek) 17th June 2010
Congratulations on Mongrel becoming the Featured Font :)
Comment by p2pnut 17th June 2010
I guess I'd better get cracking on those other European characters then!

Many, many thanks Rob - I'm a little surprised, very humbled and more than pleased to have my first featured font. And thanks for everyone's comments, as always.

Some of the extra characters are likely to prove problematic - due to the small grid and 'odd' width of the letters - but I'll do my best. For example, the current @ symbol is already a little over the top, but all I could manage given the constraints of the grid.

To answer your quandary p2pnut, I tried a few alternatives to the M and W; dispite them being a little in more in keeping with the other characters, none of them were quite as satisfying to read as these, so I opted to compromise in favour of legibility.

this is a cool font! I downloaded it. But why is this the only free font that comes up on the side?

Congrats on the featured fontstruction. The quirkiness makes it look like it shouldn't work, but the sample really sells it.
Comment by geneus1 20th June 2010
I'm flabbergasted. This is superb. I don't care what its balanced rating is, it's an eleven to me.

Every time I see your font, so excellently built, I get why I should continue doing in FS, things that I call "fonts". Jokes aside, excellent work, it's great to have great teachers like you here.
