Reproduction and extension of letters designed by Kho Liang Ie (1927–1975) for the now-defunct Lijnbaantheater in Rotterdam (1970).
I was not able to source all characters by Kho; I only have sources for A-H, J-R, T, and IJ. All other glyphs, including the lower case, were designed in the same style by yours truly.
Mixing upper and lower case meant I had to set a lot of kerning pairs. Please let me know of any errors or oversights in the comments.
Standard characters: A–Z, a–z, 0–9 .,“”‘’"'?!@_*#$%&()+-/:;<=>[\]^`{|}~
Special characters: €£¥©«®°⋅», diacritics, ×÷–—†‡…◊, and:
/IJ/ and /ij/, Dutch letter.
/ƒ/ Historic Dutch currency symbol.
/ẞ/ and /ß/, eszetts.
/←/↑/→/↓/ in Kho Liang Ie style (not perfect).
Alternates:
/¶/ Alternate /P/.
/ś/ Alternate one-storey /s/.
/Ĩ/ Alternate less-wide /f/ (for kerning conflicts such as /fi/).
/ĩ/ Alternate less-wide /i/ (for kerning conflicts such as /pi/ and /ri/).
/ĺ/ Alternate less-wide /l/ (for kerning conflicts such as /Fl/).
/‒/ (U+2012 figure dash): Lower /-/ (hyphen) for hyphenating lower-case or smallcaps.
See also: Lijnbaantheater Next (with regular lower-case letters).
The Lijnbaantheater Next Smallcaps font strictly has no descenders and contains some alternatives for punctuation at max. 7 dots of height. The pipe character /|/ is an exception, it is used to keep the vertical spacing equal to the regular Lijnbaantheater Next.
The diacritic letters in the smallcaps font work as follows: the capitals are regular small-cap letterforms with diacritics (up to 8 dots high); the lower-case is squashed to strictly be 7 dots high. Diacritics for the capital forms are included with the regular Lijnbaantheater Next font and are up to 10 dots high. You can choose a set based on your design constraints.
