New Bricks: Half Arcs
News | Rob Meek (meek) | October 1st, 2018
Dear FontStructors,
By popular demand we’ve added four new bricks to the core brick pack today.
They are half-arc shapes in three thicknesses to match the existing arc or “macaroni” bricks, plus the so-called “pizza-slice” brick. Thanks to everyone who proposed and argued for these additions.
Unlike other bricks we decided to include only a single orientation, rather than the usual set of four rotated variants.
Happy FontStructing!

it is necessary, at least,
a mirrored version of these glyphs …

These are great additions, but I think we may need at least the other half of each arc to fully enable stacking and filtering. We can get the other halves by flipping and rotating, but that doesn’t work with stacking and filtering.

@aphoria. That’s true. It was discussed here. As far as I can see you would need 24 variations to allow stacks and composites. I think a better approach would be to allow the stacking and compositing of flipped and rotated bricks. I will look into that.

I was thinking 8 would be enough. Two for each arc thinkness, the top half and bottom half. Then you can make stacks and composites and flip and rotate those to get what we need.
I’m not sure how you get 24? Wouldn’t it be 32 to get them all?

But, yes stacking and compositing of flippped and rotated bricks would be even better! :)

You’re right – 32 – I was only planning on adding 3 bricks when I came up with 24 – then @four reminded me of the pizza brick.

I know it doesn’t belong here but I did a little brick request that might have been over looked, but would definetly fit the half arc update!

Unfortunately, until stacking & compositing flipped bricks is a reality, the set — while entirely worthwhile — is limited in functionality. Of course, once stack & compositing bricks becomes a reality, then the “extraneous” block could be removed from the set, but that would bring up another problem: what happens to people’s FontStructs once those 24 bricks are gone? Will they have to go back and replace all of the missing curves?

@goatmeal that’s certainly something we would never plan to do (remove bricks).

@Meek – Rob, that’s good to hear. I can certainly understand not wanting to add another specific 24 bricks that may become obsolete if stacking & compositing for flipping & rotating bricks ever becomes a feature of FontStruct.

I’m trying to recreate the THQ 2011 Q, i alwats fail at this.
