JS-SANS MARX (COMPRESSED BOLD) — Geometric Sans-Serif
═══════════════════════════════════
Another font addition to the ever evolving and growing collection of revivals and inspired works called LETTERS OP MAAT, a project celebrating and trying to recreate the typographic contributions originally designed by Dutch graphic designer Jurriaan Schrofer.

This time I did a revival  based on a sans-serif lettering concept Schrofer did in 1968 during his time with Mouton & Co. The lettering concept was seen on his book cover design for the book "Marx and contemporary scientific thoughts; Marx et la pensée scientifique contemporaine". The book cover only shows 4 lowercase letters, spelling the word "marx". But these pretty much have all the important features to extrapolate the remainder of the alphabet from. At the same time having just 4 letters allows for a much more loosely approach towards inventing the other letter solutions.

I decided to create a typeface family of multiple styles each with different weight properties (Light, Medium & Bold in both Compressed and Condensed form). The medium weight is what was actually seen on the original book cover.

I hope you like it,

Interrested in more of my Jurriaan Schrofer inspired? Please take a look a my complete collection of Fontstructions tagged with STF-LETTERS OP MAAT for the full catalog of fonts I contributed to this project so far.

Cheers

My apologies for being kind of aggressive with my recently published multi style font family. Usually I wouldn't do this because I don't want to push down into the next live feed page any other recently published contributions from my fellow FontStructors. We all equally deserve the opportunity to allow our works to be noticed. So again, sorry!

A huge bummer is that at this point I still have 49 finished "ready-to-publish" Jurriaan Schrofer FontStruct revisions pending to be publish in a less invasive fashion.

Cheers

Great revival family! Though I'm not a fan of the U-looking Vs – maybe this could work?

Comment by V. Sarela (Yautja) 9th october 2023

@Yautja: I 100% agree with you on the matter. I made 2 alternative forms for "Vv" that I can later further test and decide on which one to go with. The first variation with the top right hook is a direct copy of the solution I used for "Vv" in "JS-SANS GRAFISCH (Regular)", another of Schrofer's derivatives of this same rounded sans alphabet system concept.

The second variation approximates your suggestion but with rounded geometry instead. Something quite similar had been included in "JS-SANS GRAFISCH (Regular)" as well as a glyph alternate form for "Vv".

Can I ask you which one you personally prefer?

I prefer the one on the right.

I will choose the right option right away, the left one looks like an alternative Uu to me because it has the same design as the regular Uu with a slightly difference.

The one on the right looks better

@Y'all: Thanks a lot everyone!

I still find it tough to make a final decision. Ultimately I have constructed even a third variation... (Yup, why not making it even harder for myself to settle with one, right?!)

The one on the far right looks much better…

Now it's getting trickier :) the last one might be the best.

Changed the default forms for Vv
