People, let me ask smth. The questions goes to everybody but AFT.
Why do you try creating glyphs in FS that look like they should've been created with another software? I mean, isn't it easier to use professional software like illustrator, fontcreator etc for creating this kind of glyphs? Why bother using bezier angles in FS?
Thanks!
Comment by kassymkulov 30th may 2012
@Architaraz : AMEN!
Comment by Abneurone Fluid Types 30th may 2012
@architaraz // Can't we do what we want? Also, some of us don't have or even can't afford pro software, which is why the rules say it must be created with FontStruct, in order to give no advantage to any FSor.
Comment by demonics 30th may 2012
Also, some people find it more aesthetic to use a certain method of creating fonts. I gotta say, though, your minimalist beauty of a letter hits home with me! :-)

@Abneurone // Love that last sample!
Comment by demonics 30th may 2012
Hmmm. Like what demonics said I can't afford pro software (I'm still a high school student!), and I guess to a certain extent FS is more intuitive than most pro software which use actual Bezier curves. Modular construction also has a different flavour from actual curved shapes and provides a wonky angular characteristic that is distinctly FS :3 I also enjoy the fact that such fonts have different effects at different scales. Of course another thing is the awesum community here that provides feedback and suggestions which would probably be less feasible with fonts made with pro software.
Comment by 3moDuDe 30th may 2012
Ok, thanks guys, just wanted to hear some opinions. :)

Here's my recent a.
a tasbaqa was actually based on a small a. It means turtle, and four a's in a title stand for four turtle ninja characters.
Comment by kassymkulov 30th may 2012
As one who frequently attempts to achieve faux-bezier curves I might as well add my two cents worth here. I may be at the other end of the age spectrum, but my limited pension also means that I can't afford to purchase expensive software.

FS has provided me with the means to enjoy crafting fonts (and even to add a little to my pension through selling them).

It's curious that some people feel the need to constantly snipe at those of us who harmlessly and innocently amuse ourselves here ... just because we do something different to them. I try to embrace the work of all who use this wonderful application ... even those who repeatedly churn out stuff that I neither like nor rate very highly ... I have yet to make a disparaging comment about those who aspire to 'art' rather than 'craft' - and I don't intend to now.

So let's just live and let live - ok?
Comment by p2pnut 30th may 2012
the funny thing about this discussion is that I'm normally all against faux in my fontstructions. not that I don't like it and others do a great job at using them. it's just that I'm more interested in bending the limitations of FS. just this one time I gave in to the temptation and created a faux font. no offence but I think we are all amateurs here at FS and we just like to explore and no harm done... it's not that we are trying to be a competition for spiekermann or something...
Comment by laynecom 30th may 2012
@P2Pnut : Not always, but Art can also need much craft. And my personal approach of art and fonts surely needs much painstaking craft (some pieces demanding months or even years of elaboratin and constant reevaluation to find their final state). But the goal, the result aimed is completely different from what you call "craft" , generally "reconstructing" some creation or style from the past which by chance has become a "classic" which has already entered the unconscious collective of people.
Comment by Abneurone Fluid Types 30th may 2012
@architaraz // That is so cute!
@p2pnut, laynecom // I completely agree!
@Abneurone // I think I basically get what you're saying, even if I can't understand some of it :-)

Comment by Houlaiziaa 31st may 2012
Well, this and Let's Remix got me messing with bricks and filters now.
Comment by Houlaiziaa 31st may 2012
Comment by geneus1 31st may 2012
@AFT: I am not insensible towards art ... in fact I also produce work that I am relatively proud of in a variety of media - wood, silver, paint and pen & ink.
My work here at FS offers me a different form of challenge (and relaxation). Yes, I have attempted to reproduce some fine old classics, but I have also created some entirely orginal designs.
Having created something, however, I usually move on to something different (a new medium ... or here, a new style). I find it difficult to understand those artists who just endlessly churn out similar variations on a theme. It is seen in those who have created thousands of versions of the square/rectangle ... Malevich, Argento, Mondrian, Rothko, Diebenkorn etc.
So, I may just be a craftsman - but at least I try to vary my output.

By the way - this started when architaraz asked why we didn't just use expensive software - I hope my answer to that suffices.
Comment by p2pnut 31st may 2012
@P2pnut : would you post some photographs of some of your own favorite creations ?
Comment by Abneurone Fluid Types 31st may 2012

So, are we going to vote winners in these FontOuts, or...?
Comment by V. Sarela (Yautja) 31st may 2012
@Yautja // Do you want to? It might cause conflict! We can though.

@p2p, Abneurone // I don't think this is the place to have a discussion about art. This is corny, but let's respect our differences, okay? :-)
Comment by demonics 31st may 2012
So, who will be the judge of this contest, you yourself?
Sorry, but this seems unfair. Like the Top Pick case by neurone, meek seems only choose a Top Pick in his likes (sorry meek).

Here's an idea,

Voting starts after 7 days of submitting font.
People can vote via comments, by adding hashtag "fontout it will be considered as a vote.
Each vote will be counted 1 point. A vote by the demonics (the admin) may be counted 2 or more...
Voting time is 7 days.

EXAMPLE:
The a is so cool.... #fontout.
//That's one vote.//

Just an idea, demonix. It's all up to you :)
Comment by cablecomputer 31st may 2012
Hey, sorry for the bold...
Idk how to fix it :/
Comment by cablecomputer 31st may 2012
@cablecomputer // of course I wasn't going to judge it myself! Your idea is good, but why not just have people say "I vote for Abneurone's" or "My vote goes to u126" and then I count them? Also, don't vote for yourself please.

Also, two things:
1 My vote should only count as one
2 The contest will end at 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time on Saturday 9 June, which gives me time to announce the winner before FontOut2 starts. Sound good? :-)
Comment by demonics 31st may 2012
Fixed bold tag?
Comment by demonics 31st may 2012
Yep, I agree that everyone should have equal votes. The winner could get to decide the next FontOut.
Comment by V. Sarela (Yautja) 31st may 2012
I am accepting suggestions for FO2 from everyone, though. Tell me your ideas! What should FO2 be on?
Comment by demonics 31st may 2012
Fixed, thanks!

About the quote of voting, it's up to them. The important thing is just the hashtag (#). That's only an example...
About the time, sounds good. But, will the days of font submitting "overlaps" with the voting time?
Comment by cablecomputer 31st may 2012
@demonics: I quite agree ... sorry I got a bit carried away but, then again, I do get a bit p*ssed off by the frequent sniping at those of us who don't aspire to some 'higher purpose'.
Comment by p2pnut 31st may 2012
The voting just might cause sockpuppets...
Comment by Houlaiziaa 31st may 2012
We could have only participants voting, although someone could participate with a new account... So far the participants have been well-known fontstructors, but we shouldn't discourage others from participating either. Surely we are an honest bunch though?

@truth14ful: Frightening image mixing a clear videogame esthetic with a real Ground Zero image rendered artificial-like by a smart use of colours. The "CH OS" in a "You won the game" style, the A making think to some distorted Monogram based on the Anarchy symbol, but also to the Tipis of the Red Skin People and Culture Americans have destroyed to build their own civilization.

@AFT:

Comment by regular_one 1st june 2012
@truth14ful // I hate to be a meanie, but your latest sample does not include a lowercase a. It's so good, though, that we can let it slide :-)
Comment by demonics 1st june 2012
@architaraz thanks! It's not going to be a new font though, it's an alternative glyph for Thiage.
Comment by V. Sarela (Yautja) 1st june 2012
@ Architaraz : There are 4 in all (2 from the 29 May). The first(29/5) is from AFT26 Abtoy, the second (29/5) is a brand new one freely inspired by my Mad Hatter, but using a bigger grid. The third (30/5) is from AFT18 Lysergic 1b, the fourth (31/5) is from AFT9 Dopamine.
It's true that the "a" from Four resemble some of mine, particularly on "The orgians", but i think these kinds work better in context than alone, that's why i chose more baroque and pictorial ones for the samples.

@AFT: Thanks :) I can't say I was thinking of tipis when I made it, but I made it look like it was made by forceful, unjoined pen strokes, and to look a little like the A for Anarchy. But I wrote CHAOS on the picture because it serves as a reminder of the direction I feel like the world is taking: Away from order, into chaos.

Time requirements
FontOut voting starts now and ends 9 June 2012 17:00 GMT. The last time you can upload a sample is also 9 June 2012 17:00 GMT.

This circumstance is only for this FontOut. Future FontOuts will include only one week of entries and one week of pure voting.

So get your last entries in now! For this FontOut only, you can change your vote to a sample posted after this message.

How to vote
Leave a comment on this forum to determine what you think the first-, second-, and third-place samples should be. Use this format: username, sample number, place number.

Example:
architaraz, 2nd sample, first place.

Sorry, you can't vote for your own entry. :-)

Good luck, all FontStructors!
