Classic Thalamic stuff, that we all love to see. Favs are 4&7, least favs are 8&J.
Comment by djnippa 13th february 2011
I'm with djnippa: beautiful and amazing treatment of typography, as usual with you.
Comment by elmoyenique 13th february 2011
Thanks, thanks. I love these geometric challenges.

@dj: Updated your least favs. Have a look.

@elmoyenique: I was really scared sharing this one because even though the design came from my own twisted head, after being accused for copying fs I Square, it has been gnawing at me if anyone was going to believe the originality of anything I do from now on? On the other hand, I have been keenly observing your own progress and I am duly impressed with each new work. Keep it up. :-)

One way or another, we all what are circulating around here we are nourished by what we see, and none of us (IMHO) can have a surprising memory to recall every one of the fonts that happened before his eyes and then to identify and separate they and then create something completely unlike anything he has seen before. The alphabet has only a few letters, does not preclude the while existence of Shakespeare, Hawking and Bukowski. None of us are free to present as our own work, without knowing it, an idea already worked here before by another. Still working, please. It's a gift for us.
Comment by elmoyenique 13th february 2011
Meek and I have strongly defended you then, but it doesn't seem to have cheered you up. I feel sorry for that.

Dear thalamic,

Even though I have a lot of empathy, I failed to see just how difficult an experience you had recently. When Diego Sanz shared his triggered response to Tylo’s t-shirt design which uses your beautiful fontstruction, fs I Square, I decided it was not of benefit nor my place to chime in, and I hope doing so now can offer you some support and relief.

Diego’s worries about plagiarism reveal where he is at in his own creative and professional process. They are his own. None of us agree with his judgements that your font is a knockoff or even derivative. We who know your beloved body of real work can see that this question ~ Is Ata Syed a creative fraud? ~ to be as offensive as it is patently false. No doubt in my mind that you are utterly original and honorable.

Please do not take on any more of his paranoia. Please do your best to let go of the fear that others may see you in this light. I am sorry for the difficulty you have experienced, which is totally understandable and highly relatable for me. It is not an easy situation which perhaps only time will heal. Sharing more new work while still feeling some of this, you must have already taken great strides toward this healing.

One thing that feels important to note about my recollection of the timeline:
A fontstructor named Zefyrinus shared Stone Slab well before Diego released his commercial font. Quincha shares a lot more common ground, and apparently inspiration, with this earlier work than yours does with his.

I will repeat the obvious: novelty in type design does not equate to genius.

I must also point out that, despite lacking the typographic training or cultural language to see just what they were doing, literally thousands upon thousands of school children have made letterforms using this blocky idiom (even the part of filling in each and every negative space with a corresponding shape) to adorn their binders and school books. I know quite well having gone to school with maybe a hundred of them. And they were all imitating each other! Yet I challenge anyone to say definitively who first came up with this well-worn style?

Thal, you are quite brilliant in making the old new again. We love you for sharing this with us again and again. I think it is all we can hope to achieve in pursuing this art of type design.

Just my thoughts. I am sorry myself for failing to be a better friend to you and others, but I promise to never again use that as my excuse to not sharing what feels important. Surely I too am misunderstood, but only I can allow myself to be a victim to it.

Oh, sorry for the open italic tag. : (

I am hoping Rob can fix my mistake.
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 13th february 2011

I couldn't have said it any better than will.i.ૐ.

We got your back! :)
Comment by aphoria 13th february 2011
@will.i.ૐ: lol
did this work?
Is the italic ended? I hope so...
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 14th february 2011
Ah! It worked!
This font is great (I say in no italic)! 10/10
Comment by Logan Thomason (xenophilius) 14th february 2011
@willi.30 - This is ridiculous.
Nippa made a composite accessibility and there was an accidental bold... tag? Now this?? I thought a tag was "a key that opens certain doors", not "an elixir spilled on a book page."
Comment by Bismuth 14th february 2011
Thanks Xeno, you did what i could not do.

@Bismuth: “tag” in this case refers to [HTML] tag.
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 14th february 2011
Oh, and Will, I know your 30 is actually Devanagari, but I don't have a Hindi keyboard :-(
@xeno- "HAS the italic."
Comment by Bismuth 14th february 2011
Technically it is the Gujarati Om, ૐ, which has its own unicode entry at U+0AD0. So you can access it by typing Alt+AD0 on a windows machine (or digging through the character palette on a mac). Copying and pasting is the only other easy way. Sorry guys, what a load of work just to write my username!
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 14th february 2011
Thanks, guys. I appreciate all your support, especially neurone error and meek for speaking up. I had actually written him a long response which was full of sarcasm, which was, smartly moderated out. :-)

But here is my thought on originality: it doesn't exist. Everyone is inspired by something else. As for fs I Square, I know I did not copy his typeface, but nor can I claim that I had never seen it before making fsIS. The only thing I can even remember is thinking after completing 'fs SquaredUP (and nowhere to go)' is, "is there really no where to go?", which is when the idea for the 'square' came up (and not without the clue in the name of SquaredUp). Then it was just a matter of cloning and modifying, which took far less than 30 hours that he so objected to (more like one or two). Can I help it if fontstruct makes it so easy to build out a font, or even, all modesty aside, the proficiency I have using fontstructor after countless hours spent in it?

As for the shapes being the same, OK, here are the limitations: the glyph must be a square, only thin lines for negative space. Go! How I, or anyone else, could create a different 'A', I don't know. But something that his font contains that mine didn't: lowercase. There's a reason for that. I hate it when ascenders don't ascend or descenders don't descend. That makes it impossible for making a square b d f g h i j k l p q t or y. Hence no lowercase. And, what's more, I came up with this all on my own without once having to go and check what an A or Q or S looks like in a square.

And anyone who has known me from the beginning knows my fascination with completely solid block of text without compromising on legibility. It is not surprising that I would fill the negative space with mini squares. One might even call me predictable.

Original? Hardly. Copied? Not.

And I loved it when in his narration, after "copying" fsIS I said, "Awesome". How conceited am I?! When the reality is, I get this nervous tension every time I share anything.

So...thanks again for all your support...and for appreciating my rehashing of unoriginal ideas. In my next life, I will seek to be born in isolation so as not to be influenced by *any* external source. Until then...

:-)

I feel your creative spirit in all of your work, so that spark of newness in how you meticulously address even the most well-worn challenge never fails to jump up and amaze me in the details. The spirit and quality i find in your work, your “tone” and your “voice”, carries through in a way that we would never know without you sharing. It’s you who is original, thal!
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 14th february 2011
@thalamic I didn't actually moderate your comment. It got caught in our automated spam filter. Do you want me to publish it? (I haven't read it)
Comment by Rob Meek (meek) 14th february 2011
Congratulations! FontStruct Staff have deemed your FontStruction worthy of special mention. “fs Twist” is now a Top Pick.
Comment by Rob Meek (meek) 14th february 2011
Thanks, will.i.ૐ. Originality is your forte, I merely have some preconceived notions into which all possibilities are crammed. :-)

@meek: Thank for the Top Pick. You spoil me. And as for that other comment, lets just let it go. Nothing I say is going to change his mind anyway. PS: will.i.ૐ's comment is now appearing in your name. I know I am two users, but are you two too? I mean, are you two one? I mean...oh, you know what I mean. :-)
Comment by thalamic 14th february 2011
Hey thalamic,
I am quite sure you didn’t copy anything.
Furthermore: Your style is unique! It CAN’T have been copied from somewhere else.
Just please keep fontstructing in the normal way. Many of us would be sad, if you stopped to spread your ideas and your unique style.
cheers

Ata, I guess I will have to answer your question of authorship. Meek and different people. ¡^ ^ I should be flattered by this question, implying as it does a certain degree of access to the fontstruct infrastructure, but no I do not possess that either!
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 16th february 2011
I promise you, the body of my work here: my user icon, deletion of past work, inconstant presence, innovations like brickstacking, etc. are all autonomous actions i took. I am as unofficial as you can get!
Comment by William Leverette (will.i.ૐ) 16th february 2011
Sorry to have missed the allegedly plagiaristic conversation. You know I got your back. Talk of creative synchronicity has appeared here before, but it usually becomes a touchy subject when professional releases are compared with freely available ones. Ironically, as you mention originality in this font, I have two similar fonts that if you put them together and they had a baby, it would look like fs Twist. The resemblances are somewhat uncanny. I wasn't planning on releasing one of them here, so I think I'll email you a sample...once I find the fontstruction. It's a needle in my 1000+ fs haystack.
Comment by geneus1 21st february 2011
@will.u.om: I jested (sic). You and meek are brilliant in your rights. Not to mention unique. :-)

@geneus1: Thanks. I have a hard enough time finding anything specific in 300+. I am sure your challenge is exponentially more difficult. But, knowing you, I am also certain you have a brilliant tagging solution to help in retrival as well. PS: 1000+? Awesome.
Comment by thalamic 21st february 2011
This is wonderfully sophisticated, thal. The mash of strong verticals with a brick wall make for a very intriguing font. There's something about it... a genuine work of art, unsettling even.
