My problem is I want to use the full quarter-circle brick on the shoulders but also have a stroke weight that's two-and-a-half bricks wide. That dictates where the glyph starts relative to the left-bearing startpoint. Hence spacing problems.

Looks very promising. I love the 'a' and the 'k'. I often thought that dragging the letter width line grid line wise is not satisfactory, but I don't know if there's anything the programmers can do about that. Did you test it in other apps? What did the kerning mechanisms do with it?
