Simple yet highly effective: Ten Gradient Patterns only using the 5 square/block bricks that I am utilizing for my next super-secret/top-secret project. The patterns repeat in lowercase so that it will be "search-able" in FontStruct (>=11 characters). Try moving the viewer slider one or two notches to the right of PXL size view for "best" observation; however, the viewer doesn't quite do the darker patterns justice, so see comments for a better explanation as to how they were created and how you can recreate them for your own font(s).

5 = Biggest/Full Square Brick
4 = Bigger Square Brick
3 = Middle/Medium Square Brick
2 = Smaller Square Brick

55555555
55555555
55555555

Character B: Next, alternate the same block with the 2nd biggest block in a diagonal pattern:
B
54545454
45454545
54545454
45454545

Character C: Next, make a solid shape with the 2nd biggest block:
C
44444444
44444444
44444444
44444444

Character D: Next, alternate the 2nd biggest block with the middle-sized block in a diagonal pattern:
D
43434343
34343434
43434343
34343434

and so on...

E
33333333

This is an interesting, new approach to the technique used in my experiment, 4444. I think that this approach works better for larger sizes, but it isn't as pristine.
Nice experiment. 10/10
