Welcome to the very first FontOut!
Rules & Guidelines:
1) All FontStruct users may participate in FontOut, and can do so with as many entries as they like.
2) An entry in a FontOut is a picture or image on a specific FontStruct forum. It can also be a public font. There are no limits on licence.
3) If it's a font, it must be tagged with "FontOut#" where '#' stands in for the specific number of the FontOut. This week, tag fonts with FontOut1.
4) Every two weeks, a FontOut will be announced and participants can publish fonts or images within that two-week time period.
28 May 2012:
Create the most beautiful lowercase a you can. The character must be made with FontStruct. Please upload sample pictures to this discussion.
Let's see what our FontStruct community can do!
One of my most intricate "a" ever
ooooh finally! how long will this FontOut last?
Can I make just a single "a" without using a specific font I made??
@ architaraz, u126, Abneurone, 3moDuDe // Excellent contributions!
@3moDuDe // FontOut1 ends 10 June. The contest is bi-weekly.
@cablecomputer // Of course!
@abneurone // Ok.
A one-storey a. It's "italic".
I'm accepting suggestions for FontOut2
(In case you haven't noticed, I'm not very good at choosing colors)
People, let me ask smth. The questions goes to everybody but AFT.
Why do you try creating glyphs in FS that look like they should've been created with another software? I mean, isn't it easier to use professional software like illustrator, fontcreator etc for creating this kind of glyphs? Why bother using bezier angles in FS?
@Architaraz : AMEN!
@architaraz // Can't we do what we want? Also, some of us don't have or even can't afford pro software, which is why the rules say it must be created with FontStruct, in order to give no advantage to any FSor.
Also, some people find it more aesthetic to use a certain method of creating fonts. I gotta say, though, your minimalist beauty of a letter hits home with me! :-)
@Abneurone // Love that last sample!
Hmmm. Like what demonics said I can't afford pro software (I'm still a high school student!), and I guess to a certain extent FS is more intuitive than most pro software which use actual Bezier curves. Modular construction also has a different flavour from actual curved shapes and provides a wonky angular characteristic that is distinctly FS :3 I also enjoy the fact that such fonts have different effects at different scales. Of course another thing is the awesum community here that provides feedback and suggestions which would probably be less feasible with fonts made with pro software.
Ok, thanks guys, just wanted to hear some opinions. :)
Here's my recent a.
a tasbaqa was actually based on a small a. It means turtle, and four a's in a title stand for four turtle ninja characters.
As one who frequently attempts to achieve faux-bezier curves I might as well add my two cents worth here. I may be at the other end of the age spectrum, but my limited pension also means that I can't afford to purchase expensive software.
FS has provided me with the means to enjoy crafting fonts (and even to add a little to my pension through selling them).
It's curious that some people feel the need to constantly snipe at those of us who harmlessly and innocently amuse ourselves here ... just because we do something different to them. I try to embrace the work of all who use this wonderful application ... even those who repeatedly churn out stuff that I neither like nor rate very highly ... I have yet to make a disparaging comment about those who aspire to 'art' rather than 'craft' - and I don't intend to now.
So let's just live and let live - ok?
the funny thing about this discussion is that I'm normally all against faux in my fontstructions. not that I don't like it and others do a great job at using them. it's just that I'm more interested in bending the limitations of FS. just this one time I gave in to the temptation and created a faux font. no offence but I think we are all amateurs here at FS and we just like to explore and no harm done... it's not that we are trying to be a competition for spiekermann or something...
@P2Pnut : Not always, but Art can also need much craft. And my personal approach of art and fonts surely needs much painstaking craft (some pieces demanding months or even years of elaboratin and constant reevaluation to find their final state). But the goal, the result aimed is completely different from what you call "craft" , generally "reconstructing" some creation or style from the past which by chance has become a "classic" which has already entered the unconscious collective of people.
@architaraz // That is so cute!
@p2pnut, laynecom // I completely agree!
@Abneurone // I think I basically get what you're saying, even if I can't understand some of it :-)
@Architaraz: I guess it's the challenge. :)
Well, this and Let's Remix got me messing with bricks and filters now.
@AFT: I am not insensible towards art ... in fact I also produce work that I am relatively proud of in a variety of media - wood, silver, paint and pen & ink.
My work here at FS offers me a different form of challenge (and relaxation). Yes, I have attempted to reproduce some fine old classics, but I have also created some entirely orginal designs.
Having created something, however, I usually move on to something different (a new medium ... or here, a new style). I find it difficult to understand those artists who just endlessly churn out similar variations on a theme. It is seen in those who have created thousands of versions of the square/rectangle ... Malevich, Argento, Mondrian, Rothko, Diebenkorn etc.
So, I may just be a craftsman - but at least I try to vary my output.
By the way - this started when architaraz asked why we didn't just use expensive software - I hope my answer to that suffices.
@P2pnut : would you post some photographs of some of your own favorite creations ?
@AFT: This is not an art gallery (to paraphrase Magritte)
So, are we going to vote winners in these FontOuts, or...?
@Yautja // Do you want to? It might cause conflict! We can though.
@p2p, Abneurone // I don't think this is the place to have a discussion about art. This is corny, but let's respect our differences, okay? :-)
So, who will be the judge of this contest, you yourself?
Sorry, but this seems unfair. Like the Top Pick case by neurone, meek seems only choose a Top Pick in his likes (sorry meek).
Here's an idea,
Voting starts after 7 days of submitting font.
People can vote via comments, by adding hashtag "fontout it will be considered as a vote.
Each vote will be counted 1 point. A vote by the demonics (the admin) may be counted 2 or more...
Voting time is 7 days.
The a is so cool.... #fontout.
//That's one vote.//
Just an idea, demonix. It's all up to you :)
Hey, sorry for the bold...
Idk how to fix it :/
@cablecomputer // of course I wasn't going to judge it myself! Your idea is good, but why not just have people say "I vote for Abneurone's" or "My vote goes to u126" and then I count them? Also, don't vote for yourself please.
Also, two things:
1 My vote should only count as one
2 The contest will end at 12:00 PM Pacific Standard Time on Saturday 9 June, which gives me time to announce the winner before FontOut2 starts. Sound good? :-)
Fixed bold tag?
Yep, I agree that everyone should have equal votes. The winner could get to decide the next FontOut.
I am accepting suggestions for FO2 from everyone, though. Tell me your ideas! What should FO2 be on?
About the quote of voting, it's up to them. The important thing is just the hashtag (#). That's only an example...
About the time, sounds good. But, will the days of font submitting "overlaps" with the voting time?
@demonics: I quite agree ... sorry I got a bit carried away but, then again, I do get a bit p*ssed off by the frequent sniping at those of us who don't aspire to some 'higher purpose'.
The voting just might cause sockpuppets...
We could have only participants voting, although someone could participate with a new account... So far the participants have been well-known fontstructors, but we shouldn't discourage others from participating either. Surely we are an honest bunch though?
@p2pnut // Don't we all?
@u126, Yautja // I think it's going to be fine. I say anyone can vote.
@four, Yautja // Awesome job! Love that minimalism! Keep up the good work.
I guess voting and submitting will have to overlap so get 'em in quick!
@truth14ful: Frightening image mixing a clear videogame esthetic with a real Ground Zero image rendered artificial-like by a smart use of colours. The "CH OS" in a "You won the game" style, the A making think to some distorted Monogram based on the Anarchy symbol, but also to the Tipis of the Red Skin People and Culture Americans have destroyed to build their own civilization.
Nice one! Reminds me some works of AFT. When are you planning on publishing it?
Nice one! Also reminds me some works of AFT. Knowing how quick you are, I guess I'll be seeing it published soon :)
You're first "a" (30th May) looks like a letter to me and the second (31 May) looks like a drawing, and having seen almost every font of yours, I still can't remember them :)
super minimal and my FAV of this fontout so far!
you need to released the corresponding fontstructing… or is it yet?
@truth14ful // I hate to be a meanie, but your latest sample does not include a lowercase a. It's so good, though, that we can let it slide :-)
@architaraz thanks! It's not going to be a new font though, it's an alternative glyph for Thiage.
@ Architaraz : There are 4 in all (2 from the 29 May). The first(29/5) is from AFT26 Abtoy, the second (29/5) is a brand new one freely inspired by my Mad Hatter, but using a bigger grid. The third (30/5) is from AFT18 Lysergic 1b, the fourth (31/5) is from AFT9 Dopamine.
It's true that the "a" from Four resemble some of mine, particularly on "The orgians", but i think these kinds work better in context than alone, that's why i chose more baroque and pictorial ones for the samples.
@Demonics : here's a minimal one, just for you, i know you like them
@Abneurone // Thanks :-)
I like a lot the ne (Abneurone Fluid Types) samples! They're over me and I love them!
Dear ne: it's my pleasure.
THank you Elmo, glad to please you
Thanks @demonics, I meant for the symbol in the middle to be an a with a circle around it, I know it's hard to see...
@AFT: Thanks :) I can't say I was thinking of tipis when I made it, but I made it look like it was made by forceful, unjoined pen strokes, and to look a little like the A for Anarchy. But I wrote CHAOS on the picture because it serves as a reminder of the direction I feel like the world is taking: Away from order, into chaos.
@beate + Abneurone // Nice!
What's the next FontOut? Make the cutest O on FontStruct? 'Cause if so, I'm way ahead of ya.
@elmoyenique: You've got to make a whole font that way!
Two a's from my recent font Hi-lo ;)
@CMunk: Thanks, pal. I'll try it.
@architaraz, regular one, demonics: thanks, I'm working on a full lower case and will release it soon!
First attempt to make a bezier curves font...
@cablecomputer // Cool!
So many great entries! I'm wondering if we should vote just for the winner, or give more votes (for example three points for the best, two points for the second, and one point for the third)?
@Yautja // Great idea. Actually, today is the day we start the 1-week voting period. I will make a formal announcement as forum very soon.
Get your votes in for this week's FontOut!
FontOut voting starts now and ends 9 June 2012 17:00 GMT. The last time you can upload a sample is also 9 June 2012 17:00 GMT.
This circumstance is only for this FontOut. Future FontOuts will include only one week of entries and one week of pure voting.
So get your last entries in now! For this FontOut only, you can change your vote to a sample posted after this message.
How to vote
Leave a comment on this forum to determine what you think the first-, second-, and third-place samples should be. Use this format: username, sample number, place number.
architaraz, 2nd sample, first place.
Sorry, you can't vote for your own entry. :-)
Good luck, all FontStructors!
beate, 1st sample, 1st place (very bodoni-like and elegant)
cablecomputer, 3rd sample, 2nd place (even though it's not lowercase)
four, 1st sample, 3rd place (I'm a sucker for minimalism)
1st: AFT, 5th sample.
3rd: Cablecomputer, 1st sample
Well, it wasn't easy, but I finally narrowed it down to my 3 votes:
2nd: Architaraz 2nd sample
3rd: Cablecomputer 3rd sample
Like i said before, i won't vote. Thanks Architaraz for yours, (surely the only one) anyway. For me one only is high above, it's the Truth14ful one, with its art dimension i commented above. The great majority others are obviously interesting, each in its own way.
What a great idea! Lots of wonderful designs here.
ok, so it's:
1st: architaraz, last sample (not so much the a but I love the typeface as such and I'd love to see how you did it)
2nd and so on: everything by Beate ;-)
@AFT: What's the font behind your "Sun, 3rd June, 8:05 AM"-sample? I love it and would like to see the whole font.
@laynecom : Thanks! It is from AFT74 Medieval Sweetshop, a complex style i fought much with but one of my own favorites now.
Thanks! There's no secret there actually, look for yourself, it's clonable now, hope it will help.
1st: Demonics 3rd sample (one-storey "italic" a)
2nd: Architaraz 1st sample (tasbaqa)
3rd: Elmoyenique 2nd sample (yellow on red, see two comments up)
Sorry, that is of course the 2nd sample by Architaraz...
One day left to vote!
cablecomputer, 1st sample, 1st place (beautiful!)
architaraz, 2nd sample, 2nd place (pretty and unique!)
AFT, 5th sample, 3rd place (love the shape!)
beate: bautiful samples.
AFT, 6th sample: pretty, reminds me of a violin.
CMunk: nice entries, but in the end didn't stand out.
Frodo7: clever and subtle, but ultimately lost to the tough battle.
1st: cablecomputer, 1st sample (white on yellow a).
2nd: geneus1, 1st sample (black on green a).
3rd: beate, 2nd sample (extra bold orange a).
Honorable mentions: the rest of you, guys, you're great!.
I beg your pardon. I meant:
Honorable mentions: to all you guys... how great are you, queridos compañeros!
Am I too late to vote??
1st: Beate, 1st sample (the digitalized classic green a).
2nd: four, 1st sample (bubblish blue on green a).
3rd: neurone, 5st sample (the minimalist a).
For all: You've already do the best, you're great! And thanks for people who vote for me :)
Attention all FontStructors: This week's voting ends in four hours! The last possible time to vote will be 17:00 GMT today. Please get your votes in!
Congratulations cablecomputer! Your first sample has won FontOut1.
2nd place: architaraz' second sample and beate's first sample tied.
3rd place: four's first sample, Abneurone Fluid Types' fifth sample, and geneus1's first sample tied.
Great job, all FontOut participants!
What? You no lying?? This is my first bezier curves, though. Thanks a lot for fellow FSors who vote for me, you're great!
@AFT: Your 2nd design is in my FS Collab! :)
