All Composites In My Bricks This is an essential tool for creating fontstructs. I have saved all the various angled composites as useable bricks in the MY BRICKS section. You can then use them for your own creations.

1. Make a clone of this font. Click CLONE
2. Choose A Name like 'All Composites saved in MY BRICKS". Click Clone
3. Click EDIT. Wait until it opens.
4. Click on the ARROW on the floating Tools panel, then Press A (Highlight All) on your keyboard, the pattern of bricks should change colour to blue. Now press C (copy).
5. Create a new window on your browser, and go to Fontstruct. Create a new fontstruction.
6. Choose a name for your new fontstruction.
7. Click 'Start Fontstructing'.
9. In bottom left corner you will see 'BASIC LATIN'. Click the yellow 'up arrow' next to it.
10. Choose 'Extended Latin B'.
11. Press V (Paste) to paste the pattern of bricks, you previously copied.
12. Now look in 'My Bricks' at the top left - You should see all the composite bricks.
If it does not appear, go back to the original brick pattern, and copy & paste it again.

I hope this saves you lots of time, and aids you in your creativity.

Another handy FS2.0 angle sampler! Looks like I won't have to post anything after all! ;-) Great job with the layout. This really hits on the importance of organizing the My Bricks panel. Failure to do so can result in serious bewilderment.

I think the inclusion of the 2:3 angle would be beneficial, even though it is harder to visually organize in the My Bricks panel.

@Thalamic Painstakingly organized is so true, it took a good week of tinkering to get this right. This is a clone of the Original which has all the brick combination's on it. It just looked too messy so I did this better looking simpler clone instead.

@Geneus1 Added the extra angles, even though I was trying to keep a bit of the mystery back for people to solve themselves for their own satisfaction. I'd still put up your tutorial, as mine doesn't say how it's done.

LexKominek Thanks. Anything to help, the creativity process a little less of a headache, is in my book a very good thing. Hope this helps you create some spectacular fonts.

this is an incredible gift to the FS community and you are to be commended for producing this. and what a great resource now. fantastic. this also points to another possible collaboration. i'm sure as each of us explores the new FS 2.0 features there could be much more that we could share together. anybody want to start such a collaboration? just a thought. but mucho gracias dj :)

Not that I don't love all the new possibilities...but things may have gotten too possible now. Nominal angles now supported are: 0, 7, 9, 14, 18, 27, 34, 45, 56, 63, 72, 76, 81, 83, 90 for the first quadrant alone. Pretty soon we will be doing integrals. ;-)

I have a *wild* idea. There could be an option to turn on or off (off by default) automatic smoothing at font generation time. Font Mortar would have to grow up to version 3.0, I know ... but it would mean end of excessive use of composite bricks.

I agree... It's almost scary to see what's possible now. The only limit to bezier imitations is now our patience at scrolling through huge grids. And - even though I must plead guilty, also having given it a little try with my Circle Cult - I think this is not what fontstruct is basically about. The real fascination for me personally comes from the interplay of creativity that has to work its way through the grid and bricks restriction. Going high-res for seemingly smooth curves is a way of circumventing this grid restriction, and even when the results lookstunning, it doesn't fascinate me as much as smart small-grid designs that makes creative use of the given bricks. Insofar I share neurone error's fear of a switch to fonts that are more products of artisanry than of art... (Even when geneus's Futura is very impressive.)

On the other hand it's a way for people who can't afford and/or handle professional font software to realize their non-modular ideas... So nothing wrong about that.

My hope and expectation is that after a time of excited curve-hyperactivity we we'll soon get tired of crolling through 100+ grid sizes and go back to business as usual... Ment in the best way. ;)

I take quite a relaxed attitude on this matter.

FS 2.0 is new ... and there is often a temptation to explore the new within familiar settings. I for one always used to try out new motorbikes and cars on the same stretch of road.

Equally, FS 2.0 is new ... and there are always some who don't instantly embrace what is new.

Many people here are completely conversant with classical fonts so it only natural for them to see what the new toys of 2.0 can do by replicating these well-know designs.

I seriously doubt that anyone has lost the qualities that enabled them to produce new, innovative and exciting designs in the past.

Once we are all familiar with the new bells and whistles we will, inevitably, see a return to green-field thinking ... and we will all have more tools with which to express ourselves.

It's only FS 2.0 ... not the Inquisition :)

@p2p: Your innovative and exciting Entrees have wow'd us before. I'm sure you will wow us again, whatever version of fontstruct you choose to employ. :-)

We've just been given the key to a whole new world, the fact that there are now few limitations, will inevitably lead to better more creative designs. Imagine if you only have two colours, say Cyan and Magenta to paint a picture with. There are only so many combinations you can achieve before it starts to get a little boring. Now add Yellow & Black and the combination's are limitless, so much more can be achieved. Fontstruct 2.0 rules.

I think you are very wrong, as font design is very much an artistic decision. It is a creative process.
As a designer, which is a mixture of a artist and an engineer, I try to create something new or improved every time. I did simplicity years ago, I've moved on from creating silly little ugly shapes and patterns.

When things are too simple, there's no challenge, and therefore no achievement, and no knowledge gained.

I'd really like to see you make a usable working artistic and stylish font. I know you can. I get a great deal of enjoyment from knowing that people are using my fonts in their logos and design work.

Ha ha, I'm talking about MY designs.

Anyway your Nuclear Warfare still doesn't rate in my book. Each to there own though, as I'm sure someone will like it, but it is so far removed from anything I'd ever use, that I simply cannot relate to it, sorry.
There is no comparison between you and Funk_King. He is light years ahead of you.
Some of his stuff is truly brilliant.
You've probably realised I don't comment on any one's work, unless I feel it's is worthy or has potential to be good.
Above all I will always try to help people to achieve their goals, if I feel they have the skills and are worth helping.

Interesting discussion about how far FontStruct should go (higher up the thread). I'd just like to add that there is no automatic smoothing at font generation time. Straight lines will always remain straight lines.

I could compare you and Funk_King, but there is none. He designs fonts that are comprehensive, unified, creative, usable and the right side of controlled. His fonts are intelligent and decorative, they work, with high levels of technical ability. But this is not about Funk King, this is about you, and your ability to whine people up. If you had skills, I'd maybe have a little more respect for you. You have potential to design some good fonts, but you are running around like a headless chicken at the moment, displaying over sized images, commenting on your own work several times over. You need to calm down, take a deep breath, and look at what you're doing. You are helping no one, and annoying everyone.

I'm going to remove our conversations after you have read this, as we obviously clash, and it's wasting both our time, and not good for anyone. I for one have much better things to do than argue with you.
Also any future comments you make to this font will be dismissed entirely.

Hey, chill out folks ... as I said earlier 'it's only FS 2.0, not the inquisition.'

Nobody died in the making of any composite brick or circle. Let's get back to the friendly old habit of constructive critism.

Nasty little comments about people who are exploring the new technology in their own way don't help to maintain the positive nature that has always been a feature of this site.

I have tried to respond to some fairly barbed points made by n.e. with humour ... if that fails and it continues - ignore. But whichever way it turns out ... just chill :)

You could even do this as a favour to me - it's my birthday today (67 and I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up!).

I just looked again at the image of all your cominations (on A) ... it looks like a 1950's poster for a ski resort - complete with chalets and conifers.

@dj - i do apologize for neurone error disclosing contents of a private message reagarding you. my purpose was to provide moral support, not ammunition. while i may have said aggressive, i didn't save anything about being unjustified per se. it is your right to criticize just as passionately as it is his. i think some have been rubbed the wrong way by neurone. i was hoping to encourage evolution by providing a gentle hand, perhaps your tough love is needed also :)

in any event, like a said before, you are to be thanked for the composite bricks as well as the work derived using them - the magnificenet NDC Bezica series. as well as should aphoria be congratulated for Aurora Light, thalamic for fs STencil 2.0, and geneus for Bezziaire and Xerro, among others. FS is as much a lab as a factory for some. while your remarks may have been somewhat caustic, i hope that neurone is able to deal with them - either use them for growth or discard and continue on the same. in the past, you have also given me pause with your comments - especially about usability - but i know that without your words of advice and those of others, however pointed - i would not be the same designer i have become. thanks.

@ FK. not to worry dude. I fully understand, it's all good with me.
I think he misinterpreted what I was trying to say anyway, or may be I just worded it wrong, or neglected to put a smiley face after everything :-). I think it's just a case of 'lost in translation'.
A kick up the ass always helps people out anyway, he'll be frantically beavering away trying to prove how he can do a font with bezier curves as well. I hope he does, that's the aim really :-)

Since this page has been created to support the FontStruct community, let it continue to teach by leaving all the words intact. It teaches on an entirely different level. I've learned much from reading it. I'm generally a peacemaker by nature and non-judgmentally offer the following observations of the lessons learned here, citing behaviors only and not pointing fingers, so that I can get a cumulative view of the bigger picture. Taking into account conversations that have occurred only on this page, here's what I've learned about community etiquette, and also what I consequently vow to never do.


- Attack another fontstructor's character and reputation, especially on a page where they've just shared something that massively helps the community.

- Request more work from a fontstructor, then start an argument when the request is denied, then elevate matters after discovering they don't identify with your work

- Misconstrue the constructive criticism of another, taking it personally, without an effort to gain clarity in a predominantly text-based form of communication where it is easy to misinterpret a message in the original context for which it was meant

- Accuse a fontstructor of being arrogant while saying something that is more arrogant and disrespectful

- Use a friendship to take sides against another, who already has a friendship with the aforementioned second party, in an effort to divide and provoke instead of build community

- Use private communication from a friend as a weapon to aid in an attack against another

- Blast an online feed with what can possibly be described as a new form of spamming

- Feign entitlement, even without having the experience or reputation for acting on the beneficence of the community

- Devalue active members of the community by putting down their work because it doesn't coincide with your agenda

- Tell someone what they can't say, denying them of an opinion

- State that you're ending an argument, then end it with a confrontational statement

And this was primarily just a message to myself for future reference. Here's to a creative, peaceful, and thriving community. Amen. =)

@neurone error: It's a fact, that there are several hidden hinds everywhere, relating to YOUR "spamming" way of publishing samples. It's simply not necessary to use such huge pics more than once or twice a font, especially not isolated glyphs. On the other hand, your enthusiasm is overwhelming and it somehow always puts a smile on my face. keep it up, but a little regard on others arts would be just nice and civilised :)

As i remember, we had a harmless collision, as well. Don't get me wrong, i'm not thinking about that anymore :)

I'm not sure it's possible using the current set up. Unless you use advanced filter settings, but then you lose a few of the other angles.

@BanjoZebra: The 3:4 angle is possible if you use the advanced filter setting of 1 Horizontal and 2 Vertical. In addition, the 1:12 and 1:16 angles are enabled, but the 2:3, 6:1 and 8:1 angles are respectively unavailable. Conversely, if you use a filter setting of 2 Horizontal 1 Vertical, you enable the 4:3, 12:1, and 16:1 angles, but disable the 3:2, 1:6, and 1:8 angles respectively.

If you're not well versed on transformational effects of working in the stretched filterspaces, you can quickly become confused of its inner workings. I recommend that djnippa's brick tutorial should be mastered first before delving into anything more advanced. The myriad brick possibilities in the default 1:1 filter are satisfactory for most fontstructions imaginable.

NOTE: The only possible scales on fs are x:1, x:2, x:3, x:4, x:6, & x:8, because the brix in composites are limited to four.

@micgio: Great find! I'm surprised it took over a year for anyone to catch that error. I was off in explaining the transposition. You are correct in stating that the 1:6 and 1:8 angles are still available. When utilizing the taller 1:2 filter, all of the regular height dimensions shift to steeper angles. The standard angles of 1:3 and 1:4 are eliminated when they stretch to 1:6 and 1:8. The standard 1:6 and 1:8 angles become 1:12 and 1:16. Again, the converse is also true regarding the wide 2:1 filter setting.

Thanks for these new and awesome bricks! Although I usually prefer to make things with the bricks already at hand, maybe this will help me venture out into the world of compositing. I still don't really get all this mumbo jumbo because i'm 10 years old. Thanks for making this, it's much appreciated among the FS community.

Now this is great! I'm stumped with a few diagonals in my font which otherwise works fine, so I can use these! Means I'll rework spacefurs regular once again and the condensed, extended and monospaced versions need some more attention before release to the public.

i've never been able or motivated to use this tool-set mainly because i work high-def (2X2 brick size). once i cloned this and tried to change the filter setting to 2X2 and it was a mess. now with the new nudge feature i think it will be possible to clone and change the settings and with some work, manipulate these bricks to work with high-def projects. that will be real sweet.

Thanks FK. I use high-def 2x2 all the time. I've never had any problems with it. What were you trying to do with it? I think you must have either been using it for the wrong purpose, or tried to push it too far. Everything has it limitations. :)
In regards the new 'nudge' feature, I think this is still an essential tool, even though some composites could be deemed as unnecessary now.

i think when i tried before and changed the settings, i was just overwhelmed by what the bricks did. i think if there was a 2x2 version that was nice and clean like your original, it would have made sense to me... that and avoiding the tequila i was drinking :)
