The International Morse Code encodes the ISO basic Latin alphabet, some extra Latin letters, the Arabic numerals and a small set of punctuation and procedural signals as standardized sequences of short and long signals called "dots" and "dashes", or "dits" and "dahs". Because many non-English natural languages use more than the 26 Roman letters, extensions to the Morse alphabet exist for those languages.
Each character (letter or numeral) is represented by a unique sequence of dots and dashes. The duration of a dash is three times the duration of a dot. Each dot or dash is followed by a short silence, equal to the dot duration. The letters of a word are separated by a space equal to three dots (one dash), and two words are separated by a space equal to seven dots. The dot duration is the basic unit of time measurement in code transmission.[1] For efficiency, the length of each character in Morse is approximately inversely proportional to its frequency of occurrence in English. Thus, the most common letter in English, the letter "E," has the shortest code, a single dot.
Morse code is most popular among amateur radio operators, although it is no longer required for licensing in most countries. Pilots and air traffic controllers usually need only a cursory understanding. Aeronautical navigational aids, such as VORs and NDBs, constantly identify in Morse code. Compared to voice, Morse code is less sensitive to poor signal conditions, yet still comprehensible to humans without a decoding device. Morse is therefore a useful alternative to synthesized speech for sending automated data to skilled listeners on voice channels. Many amateur radio repeaters, for example, identify with Morse, even though they are used for voice communications.
For emergency signals, Morse code can be sent by way of improvised sources that can be easily "keyed" on and off, making it one of the simplest and most versatile methods of telecommunication. The most common distress signal is SOS or three dots, three dashes and three dots, internationally recognized by treaty.Morse%20code%20is%20a%20method%20of%20transmitting%20text%20information%20as%20a%20series%20of%20on-off%20tones%2C%20lights%2C%20or%20clicks%20that%20can%20be%20directly%20understood%20by%20a%20skilled%20listener%20or%20observer%20without%20special%20equipment.%20The%20International%20Morse%20Code%20encodes%20the%20ISO%20basic%20Latin%20alphabet%2C%20some%20extra%20Latin%20letters%2C%20the%20Arabic%20numerals%20and%20a%20small%20set%20of%20punctuation%20and%20procedural%20signals%20as%20standardized%20sequences%20of%20short%20and%20long%20signals%20called%20%22dots%22%20and%20%22dashes%22%2C%20or%20%22dits%22%20and%20%22dahs%22.%20Because%20many%20non-English%20natural%20languages%20use%20more%20than%20the%2026%20Roman%20letters%2C%20extensions%20to%20the%20Morse%20alphabet%20exist%20for%20those%20languages.%0D%0AEach%20character%20%28letter%20or%20numeral%29%20is%20represented%20by%20a%20unique%20sequence%20of%20dots%20and%20dashes.%20The%20duration%20of%20a%20dash%20is%20three%20times%20the%20duration%20of%20a%20dot.%20Each%20dot%20or%20dash%20is%20followed%20by%20a%20short%20silence%2C%20equal%20to%20the%20dot%20duration.%20The%20letters%20of%20a%20word%20are%20separated%20by%20a%20space%20equal%20to%20three%20dots%20%28one%20dash%29%2C%20and%20two%20words%20are%20separated%20by%20a%20space%20equal%20to%20seven%20dots.%20The%20dot%20duration%20is%20the%20basic%20unit%20of%20time%20measurement%20in%20code%20transmission.%5B1%5D%20For%20efficiency%2C%20the%20length%20of%20each%20character%20in%20Morse%20is%20approximately%20inversely%20proportional%20to%20its%20frequency%20of%20occurrence%20in%20English.%20Thus%2C%20the%20most%20common%20letter%20in%20English%2C%20the%20letter%20%22E%2C%22%20has%20the%20shortest%20code%2C%20a%20single%20dot.%0D%0AMorse%20code%20is%20most%20popular%20among%20amateur%20radio%20operators%2C%20although%20it%20is%20no%20longer%20required%20for%20licensing%20in%20most%20countries.%20Pilots%20and%20air%20traffic%20controllers%20usually%20need%20only%20a%20cursory%20understanding.%20Aeronautical%20navigational%20aids%2C%20such%20as%20VORs%20and%20NDBs%2C%20constantly%20identify%20in%20Morse%20code.%20Compared%20to%20voice%2C%20Morse%20code%20is%20less%20sensitive%20to%20poor%20signal%20conditions%2C%20yet%20still%20comprehensible%20to%20humans%20without%20a%20decoding%20device.%20Morse%20is%20therefore%20a%20useful%20alternative%20to%20synthesized%20speech%20for%20sending%20automated%20data%20to%20skilled%20listeners%20on%20voice%20channels.%20Many%20amateur%20radio%20repeaters%2C%20for%20example%2C%20identify%20with%20Morse%2C%20even%20though%20they%20are%20used%20for%20voice%20communications.%0D%0AFor%20emergency%20signals%2C%20Morse%20code%20can%20be%20sent%20by%20way%20of%20improvised%20sources%20that%20can%20be%20easily%20%22keyed%22%20on%20and%20off%2C%20making%20it%20one%20of%20the%20simplest%20and%20most%20versatile%20methods%20of%20telecommunication.%20The%20most%20common%20distress%20signal%20is%20SOS%20or%20three%20dots%2C%20three%20dashes%20and%20three%20dots%2C%20internationally%20recognized%20by%20treaty.
