more mucking about trying to get a believable spacing scheme. those numerals aren't very believable, I know that.

yummy! yery sweet!!
upper cae is overestimated :)
Comment by kix 6th june 2009
I love that a.
Comment by aphoria 6th june 2009
Love it.
But I always feel every font should have an upper & lower case, unless it's an upper case only. Otherwise its usage drops..... and it's ALL about usage.
Comment by djnippa 6th june 2009
I don't care as much about usage as I should. Otherwise I'd finish each and every font. Once I've got the idea down I've got to be pretty motivated to fill in all the jots'n'tittles.

I must admit it's gratifying to see the downloads mount up, though.
And a happy warmth seeing that pink dot.

love. thick and funky :) very unique - i know - oxymoron :( reagarding lc vs uc - i dunno. i've done initially lc and gotten very good dl, then when i finish uc, dl drops :( sometines i think u get good dl with just lc because well mostly lc is used most often, right? it also "looks" better. when you throw in uc u don't get as good an idea of continuity i think. just my 2 cents. otherwise, i have noticed less frequent and more um...discriminating pink dots. could be an attempt to encourage some of the newer talant on the site which is great. but yes, they're very nice to behold :)

i to struggle with "finishing" after the basic set is done. i know punctuation is probably the easiest thing to do and really completes the set, but sometimes the .,!? are just stubborn little grunts :) i really really admire those troops whose create these full set of latin characters - always very impressive and no doubt adds tremendously to the usually.

your statement about motivation made me think - motivation = $$$? not u per se, but i think in general if we had that incentive here i think it would greatly stimulate my motivation to make each complete as complete as can be :) kudos to djnippa for pioneering efforts to get paid :) don't know if tihs is the place to ask, but how's it working out nippa? i saw you recently had a new pink dot which i don't see anymore and i think you were saying u might remove the font under certain $$$ cirucmstances.

anyway, nice work again tag. and yes, i have noticed you have been getting some good dl numbers - which are rightly deserved for your continued excellent collection. congrats - for me the pink dot is truly the cherry on top of those sweet dls.

hey, sorry about the typos (we need edit ability :) should be "who create" not "whose create" and "usability" not "usually". ah, never have a writer proof his own work, cause we usually don't :)

I realise this is still work in progress, and I hope this isn't taken the wrong way, but I've just cloned your great fontstruct.
I'm unsure whether it's deliberate or not but I found some inconsistencies with the spacing and width of characters. These may not all be to your taste, i'll leave the final decisions with you.

Here's the list:
0. 'a' advance spacing needs increasing 1 block.
1. b & h have a different left serif size. Both should be 4 blocks wide
2. 'h' seems too thin. Shouldn't it be an extra 4/5 block wide to match 'b'?
3. Advance spacing on 'b' should only be 1 block.
4. 'c' needs to be 2 blocks right of the left line, just like 'a'. and slightly widening by two blocks.
5. 'd' needs moving left 2 blocks.
5. 'e' may look better with a 3 block slice taken out of it, and moving it left 2 blocks. Also the left stem is thinner than every other character. Needs widening by one block.
6. 'G' needs to be moved left one square.
7. 'i' needs to move left 1 block. Just like the 'h' & 'b'.
8. 'j' same as above. Also advance width is out by 5/6 blocks.
9. 'k' needs moving left one block to be just like 'b' & 'h'
10. 'l' needs moving right 1 square, then filling in the half blocks with full blocks.
11. 'm' needs moving left one block
12. 'n' needs widening by 4 blocks to match 'h'.
13. 'o' may need widening by 2 blocks.
14. 'p' needs moving left one block Widening by 4 blocks, and the slice should be 3 blocks wide.
15. 'q' looks like the G. I think it may look better (see below), also needs widening by 4 blocks. Left stem is 1 block too thin.
16. 'r' needs moving right 1 block, and then make the half blocks full blocks on the top left stem.
17. 't' needs moving right 1 block.
18. 'u' needs widening by 2 blocks, and moving right one block, then filling in the half squares with full squares.
19. 'v' similar to 'u' except doesn't need widening. Advance spacing should be two blocks.
20. 'w' similar to 'u' with the half square thing, and it doesn't need widening. Advance spacing should be two blocks.
21. 'x' needs moving left one block. Advance spacing should be one block.
22. 'y' needs the half squares changed to full squares, then all moving left 1 block, and widening by 1 block. Advance width should be increased to two blocks. Also the tail is 1 block too long.

Take what you want from this, and all with a pinch of salt. I'm just trying to constructive to your brilliant design.

@king: I'm hearing what you say about U.C. I wish the lower case was presented first in the view pane, because in my case (so to speak) it's the better half of the set.

As for the trojans who not only complete the basic set but also all the umlauti, accents, graves, circumcisions, cintillae, bumps and grinds -- they astound me. Thalamic collaborated with me on a font a while ago and he churned out masses of extended characters for it. I was boggled at his indefatigability. Howja like that for a polysylabism...

$$$ would be the kiss of death for me! I'd never finish anything. I'd be so worried about offering value for money I'd be paralyzed.

@nippa: for better or worse, most of my inaccuracies are deliberate. Except for the exceptions (yer actual mistakes)! The left- and right-bearing waywardness of some of the glyphs are my attempt to get a flow going: tight(ish) letterspacing without ugly gaps. Part of the charm of the Fontstruct spacing system is you'd need to be a genius to pull off an entirely seamless letterspacing effort; needless to say I'm not in that league. The half-brick reduction of some of the serif widths is to allow tight spacing without letters crashing into each other. Cheating, I know, but I'm not averse to it. All fonts are full of cheating anyway; it's just that in Fontstruct they are a bit more raw.

Your observation about the e is of course right and will help homogenise the colour.

I'd like to see if your amendments make for better overall colour. I'm too much in thrall to the next damn thing to try them out.

It's why I make all my designs "pillageable". Anyone else can feel free to have a go. I'm flattered that you've taken the time to understand the font.

I'm a bit like a forgetful insect-mother: once the babies are born they have to fend for themselves.

I love this font; it has such a strong personality. I think my favorite character is the r.

I've read it written so many times that those tiny serifs make the flow of reading better (which I am still unsure about--I think it's more of the distinctive glyphs that increases the readability), and in this font, they do make the flow better. You know you've always wanted to do a connected font; I think you can easily modify a cloned copy of this one into a connected font.

As for that collaboration font(s)...we should just release them...unfinished...because despite your faith in my patience, doing the same thing over and over was getting on my nerves. :P I am more of a "Next!" kinda person. Our ambition was far greater than what we could both provide, combined even. ;)
Comment by thalamic 7th june 2009
...and we should let our "conversation" be, should you choose to release them. I think it'll be more fun for everyone else that way.
Comment by thalamic 7th june 2009
oh okay, go on then.

As for connected fonts... months ago your inspired offerings in this dept motivated me to have a few goes myself, and the results were woeful.

I did the same sentence so you get a better feel for its colour. Whatever you decide, this font still still rocks. It's very distinctive.

As an idea how about creating a Fontstruct using a set grid size and all the people we know and respect. We draw straws for who gets what letters, and then contribute them to the final font, or Someone starts it then the next person adds to it, then passes it on? Just a random thought expanding on your joint project.

This has a -1 in Advance Spacing. I think it reads slightly better, as it's a bit tighter.
