It draws inspiration from neo-classical architecture, tattoos the base outline takes elements from church windows holding the inner detailing which was somewhat inspired by a combination of knit-work and the forms within the glass holding together stain glass windows. The flourishes and filigree forms are a more simplistic take on tattoo lettering. I chose Ornate. I was particularly drawn to this theme due to its relations with Biblical manuscripts and the architecture within Churches. I ended up combining the manuscript like lettering with features of Churches. I realised that this combination creates a great contrast between thick and thin, straight and curves. I found it difficult to create curves on font struct, but I rose to the challenge and created this. It was my first time using this site and I found it quite hard at first but now quite enjoy the possibilities. I started by looking at the word "Ornate" which to me, means adorned or decorated. When I looked at decorative adorned work, I noticed the use of vines and flowers. I then took photos of vines on buildings which inspired my font. I started with a basic letter form and by using composite bricks I added pattern in the bricks and edges much like some older buildings. Then finally added vines and flowers to complete the font. I began by looking at jewelry and "flourishes" on other fonts. After playing around with shapes and curves I realised i hadn't been thinking outside of the box. Ornate could have different meanings and take many forms. I then took interest in Aztec and Native American prints. The brief we were given was to design a typeface using a key word, mine being 'ornate'. My ideas initially stemmed from architecture and then to the tilling within. A font inspired by door handles, gates, anything that has an 'entrance' and is ornate looking. Alot of my research was carried out in Bath. I experimented with photography and wire to start with but mostly focused on drawing. Godwin (1833-1886) born in Stokes Croft, Bristol. He was influential in the Aesthetic movement that created "the look" of Victorian Britain. He began his career working in the strongly polychromatic "Ruskinian Gothic" style of mid-Victorian Britain, inspired by The Stones of Venice, then moved on to provide designs in the "Anglo-Japanese taste" of the Aesthetic Movement and Whistler's circle in the 1870s. A friend of Oscar Wilde, James Whistler and William Burges he was also the father of revered actress Dame Ellen Terrys illegitimate child. Godwin's influence can be detected in the Arts and Crafts Movement. To judge from his sketchbooks at the Victoria and Albert Museum, one might have expected an eclectic historicist, but Godwin, by no means a tame reproducer of antiquarian Gothic designs, was among the first to extend the European design repertory to include the arts of Japan, which had been opened to the Western world in 1853. His work is undergoing a revival since he was jokingly adopted as the patron saint of Stokes Croft by community action group the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. The group aim to to put some of his finest architectural achievements in the city back to good use as many of them despite being buildings of some historical significance lie empty and unused.
