I think I like this alternate version , but I didn't get the concept of choosing black areas, and why some don't have that at all )

i really don'i have a concept for the black areas – any tip appreciated. and it don't have to be a concept just on a gut level.

I think your new updates make it look more organic, less mechanical, and it's a good thing, especially the Lowercase which became more irregular, a quirky mix of stone age and electronic age feel. That would be also like this that i personally would have made it evolve.
