The prep drawing of this had a cap-height of 11 bricks. It looked promising, so when I redrew it in FS I denied myself the masochistic pleasures of a tight scheme for the greater scope of a doubled grid.
Congratulations! FontStruct Staff have deemed your FontStruction worthy of special mention. “rangitoto” is now a Top Pick.
Always the card, intaglio. This one has a really comfortable informal script appeal to go with its ultrablack, angular forms. Such a combination always feels delightfully playful to me. And full of life, too. That k, for instance, looks right poised to pickup a peanut with that dextrous nozzle of his! :D
Thanks Rob for the top pick. I shall now guiltily flesh out the figures and punctuation in order to present a more useful offering.
@will: seeing how I've sworn off curves-by-numbers, I've become increasingly interested in the shorthand that the octagonal approach offers. I've had a go at more-or-less strict octagonal designs, but what interests me more is the mix of "illegal" angles along with the conventional ones. How economical can you be, and still fool the eye into seeing curves? And what's more, fooling a computer monitor. (Easier and harder by turns.)
I love the look and effect of the e in just this way you describe. So much so that I wish you would make a lowercase l (that’s el) variant with a similarly loopy, scripty, thick/thin feel. Totally bonkers, I know. That’s how much I like that e.
Also, am I reading you correctly that before you structed this you drew it out on graph paper? I scan has cheezburger?
Oh my god. I just noticed. Those numerals take the cake. Without hyperbole I can say, “Best set ever created in fontstruct”. 100/10
Those numerals are delicious...great work intaglio.
@will.i.ૐ: I've made up a file in Indesign that mimics Fontstruct. There's a 5mm grid and on the pasteboard I've got squares, triangles, circles and whatnot which snap to it.
@aphoria: glad you like them. Although I probably haven't finished. The weight looks a bit uneven (probably because I dashed them out during the adbreaks of "Fringe" on the telly). I know. It rots your brain.
Packed with dynamic tension, Uptake is an exciting and characterful but also eminently usable sans.
