Thanks everyone. @Frodo: that's a good idea. But I've been overtaken by the tyranny of a new idea using the same proportions, more or less. This time I'll double the scale. I'll knock off these diagonal crossbars convincingly if it kills me.

Wow, thanks, afrojet! I was gutted I hadn't started big enough but maybe I should content myself with Frodo's suggestion and do a small caps. But I think I'd have to work back-to-front: move the present caps figures to the lower case slots and then construct bigger versions for the caps. A bit daunting, trying to keep the proportions the same in a too-tight grid scheme. Maybe an unshared clone as a trial first...
