When I see that a glyph will look like a mutant 8 when a diacritic is present, I choose not to include that letter at all. And why can't the effective height be reduced in post production?
“Lowering the ring is a technique many fonts have to use to avoid increasing their effective height (especially pixel fonts).” And they sometimes shorten the height of the letter as well to make it fit inside the grid...

Nice k, but the t tail is too long, and that x is somewhat strange. Also letters with rings have their rings way too close to the letters themselves.
