That was amazing. I didn\u2019t think it possible, but you have surpassed yourselves once again.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m sorry that it took an extra week to complete this blog post. One major difficulty was simply that there were so many competition entries worthy of recognition. Indeed, many entries merit a blog post all to themselves. I would encourage anyone reading this to <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/gallery\/tag\/42870\/TwentiesComp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">browse all the entries<\/a> directly because they simply cannot all be represented here.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s have a look at a selection of the entries. You\u2019ll find the prizewinners at the very end of the post, but everyone who entered is a champion. Well done!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/casino-monte-carlo@4x-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3824 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/casino-monte-carlo@4x-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3881\" height=\"6514\" data-wp-pid=\"3824\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From top to bottom: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918683\/codarte\">Codarte<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/464661\/yautja\">V. Sarela (Yautja),<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1916775\/db-mangold\">db Mangold<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/121916\/beate\">beate<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1915930\/twentysomething\">twentysomething<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/378391\/four\">four<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921159\/kd-dekorat\">KD Dekorat<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/529376\/architaraz\">architaraz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u2013 We start with four wonderful, intelligent designs, all of which were a delight to work with as installed fonts. I love the dot details in <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918683\/codarte\">Codarte<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1916775\/db-mangold\">db Mangold<\/a> leaves me speechless. I\u2019m guessing the inspiration is <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/42235\/bernhard-antique\">Bernhard Antique<\/a> but this seems to be a completely original and mature design that goes far beyond what I thought was possible with FontStruct. Amazing.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1915930\/twentysomething\">twentysomething<\/a> is a lovely, light and playful thing which ended up being the FontStructor\u2019s favourite this time around.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921159\/kd-dekorat\">KD Dekorat<\/a> with its maze-like panelling is a beautiful example of how diverse Deco typography can be.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/theatre-royal@4x.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3821\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/theatre-royal@4x.png\" alt=\"Twenties Comp Samples 2\" width=\"3880\" height=\"7569\" data-wp-pid=\"3821\" \/><\/a>From top to bottom: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921327\/g1-decoreus\">G1 Decoreus<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/13969\/geneus1\">geneus1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920254\/kd-jermaine\">KD Jermaine<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/529376\/architaraz\">architaraz<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919415\/db-ventica\">db Ventica<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/121916\/beate\">beate<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920742\/kd-xxies\">KD Xxies<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/529376\/architaraz\">architaraz<\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not sure what <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921327\/g1-decoreus\">G1 Decoreus<\/a> was inspired by, I\u2019d love to know, but it certainly feels true to the architectural and decorative spirit of the 1920s. Stout and elegant at the same time. I love it.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920254\/kd-jermaine\">KD Jermaine<\/a> is an intricate and pretty multilined deco typeface, but note also the clever XX pun running right through the alphabet.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919415\/db-ventica\">db Ventica<\/a>: Um. What? How? ?? Another virtuoso re-FontStruction of an original \u201920s typeface, this time, I believe, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/8075\/fanfare\">Fanfare<\/a>. Amazing!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920742\/kd-xxies\">KD Xxies<\/a> is yet another fine Deco typeface from architaraz. Note that although I have only used the caps here, there is also a lower case.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/das-cabinet-des-dr-caligari@4x.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3816\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/das-cabinet-des-dr-caligari@4x.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3880\" height=\"6450\" data-wp-pid=\"3816\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From top to bottom: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918257\/bulbambulaf3630\">bulbambulAF3630<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/392385\/jirinvk\">jirinvk<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1922669\/tm-renmac\">tm RenMac<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/84936\/minimum\">minimum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1922576\/caligari-2\">Caligari<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1800843\/erictom333\">erictom333<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920230\/gilded-teatro\">Gilded Teatro<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921395\/gilded-teatro-3\">Gilded Teatro Double<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1138902\/japanyoshi\">Haley Wakamatsu (UkiyoMoji Fonts) (japanyoshi)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The inimitable jirinvk created <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/gallery\/tag\/42874\/Bulbambul\">an entire family of graphically strong bulbambuls<\/a> for the competition, inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gunta_St%C3%B6lzl\">Gunta St\u00f6lzl<\/a> (1897\u20131983), the Queen of Bauhaus. Note that the letters in the sample are rotated slightly from the original typeface.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1922669\/tm-renmac\">TM RenMac<\/a>, shown very much out of context here, cleverly takes the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Rennie_Mackintosh\">Charles Rennie Mackintosh<\/a>, the Glaswegian Designer and Architect, and reinterprets it on the FontStruct grid. Thanks for this one miminum!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1922576\/caligari-2\">Caligari<\/a> is a lovely, messy cutout design which inspired the sample as a whole, while <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920230\/gilded-teatro\">Gilded Teatro<\/a> forms another little family: A perfect articulation of deco style in two pixel fonts, both a pleasure to work with.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the-new-world-restaurant@4x.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3820\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/the-new-world-restaurant@4x.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3881\" height=\"6896\" data-wp-pid=\"3820\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From top to bottom: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1923608\/noar-1\">Noar2<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1322007\/galoreporter\">Galo (galoreporter)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1923709\/g1-broadwaif\">G1 Broadwaif<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/13969\/geneus1\">geneus1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918315\/ztefan-eye-fs\">ztefan eYe\/FS<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/198352\/elmoyenique\">elmoyenique<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1917967\/shooting-star-1\">Shooting Star<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1438344\/bluemon-1\">Echo Heo (bluemon)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Deco all the way in the above image.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1923608\/noar-1\">Noar2<\/a> is a classic, condensed, deco typeface with a small-caps lower case, full of subtle and characterful details.<\/p>\n<p>G1 <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1923709\/g1-broadwaif\">Broadwaif<\/a> is simply beautiful. There are alternate caps in the lower case.<\/p>\n<p>ztefan eYe\/FS will appear again later in this post so I\u2019ll skip that one for now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1917967\/shooting-star-1\">Shooting Star<\/a> is that FontStruction rarity: a legible typeface which can work for copy at medium and smallish sizes. Sarela (Yautja)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1917460\/kem-base\">KEM Base<\/a> is inspired by the work of designer <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kem_Weber\">Kem Weber<\/a>. I enjoy the quirky asymmetry. For me the design is suggestive of early 20th century primitivism.<\/p>\n<p>The beautiful leaf-like \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1917579\/briste\">briste<\/a>\u201d also has an organic character, belying the grid beneath, while right at the bottom you see the ambicase <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1916311\/moderto\">Moderto<\/a> \u2013 a perfectly executed and very legible design inspired by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/4070\/futura-display\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Futura Display<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/f-street-diner@4x.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3818\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/f-street-diner@4x.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3881\" height=\"6896\" data-wp-pid=\"3818\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From Top: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1917636\/oshandeco\">OshanDeco<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1410467\/wataru-aiso\">Wataru (Wataru Aiso)<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918582\/ginevras-typewriter\">ginevra&#8217;s typewriter<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1761551\/swash-buckler\">swash.buckler<\/a>, (the third typeface in this sample sadly seems to have been deleted from FontStruct since I downloaded it. Pattern element from <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1561375\/brick-basket-rev2\">Brick Basket Rev2<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1520560\/zephram\">zephram<\/a> (not part of competition).<\/p>\n<p>Some extravagant deco geometry in <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1917126\/baardusan\">Baardusan<\/a>, and then three FontStructions from elmoyenique. I really enjoyed the rich back story to his entries, connecting three art and design movements which marked the 1920s \u2013 Bauhaus, Deco and Contstructivism \u2013 with their three European capitals, and with three mysterious figures appearing in a series of period photos. When the novel comes out, I will read it. With Zandrine, as with beate\u2019s entries we\u2019re going back into typographic history, perhaps well beyond the 1920s in this case, to <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/31568\/rubens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rubens<\/a> perhaps?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/twenty-zwanzig@4x.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3822\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/twenty-zwanzig@4x.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"3881\" height=\"8168\" data-wp-pid=\"3822\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From top: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918053\/tm-the-xx\">tm The XX<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/84936\/minimum\">minimum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919628\/russian-ag\">Russian AG<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/152226\/frodo7\">Frodo7<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919938\/twenty-tmchty\">Twenty-tmchty<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1023059\/m_cm\">m_cm<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1915946\/twentwenty\">TwenTwenty<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1664236\/bwm\">BWM<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920628\/frunze-stencil\">Frunze Stencil<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/152226\/frodo7\">Frodo7<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1918053\/tm-the-xx\">tm The XX<\/a> caught the eye of our guest judge, Nick Sherman:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cI love type that pushes the boundaries of how type should work or how it even can be rendered with current digital rendering technology. This typeface does both of those things. In many typical typographic contexts of size and resolution, all the little details of the design turn to mush (the fact that there are specific instructions on how to zoom to see it properly on the FontStruct site is just one such example). But if you have the bravery to set it at gigantic sizes, you can really see how wonderfully bonkers it is. Between the underlying patterns and the variants of each letter, there is also all kinds of potential for cool effects with color and overlaid glyphs.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919628\/russian-ag\">Russian AG<\/a> is an impeccable Rodchenko-inspired slab-serif with cyrillic support.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919938\/twenty-tmchty\">Twenty-tmchty<\/a> is a highly conceptual interpretation of the theme \u2013 a twenty-by-twenty grid and only twenty unique glyphs covering 66(?) different symbols. So for example, one glyph is used to represent l,u,v,L,U and V. Fascinating!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/official-programme@4x.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3840\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/official-programme@4x.png\" alt=\"Twenties Comp Samples\" width=\"3880\" height=\"6897\" data-wp-pid=\"3840\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>From top: <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921397\/g1-daptone\">G1 2020 Vision<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/13969\/geneus1\">geneus1<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920702\/db-questura\">db Questura<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/121916\/beate\">beate<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919052\/nx-chaos\">NX Chaos<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructors\/1826614\/nyxo8803\">Nyxo8803<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Nick was impressed by <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1921397\/g1-daptone\">G1 2020 Vision<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis typeface occupies a spot among other halftone typefaces like <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/31663\/calypso\">Calypso<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/39227\/tonal\">Tonal<\/a>, and especially <a href=\"https:\/\/fontsinuse.com\/typefaces\/39249\/process\">Process<\/a>. I\u2019ve always had a fondness for type that plays with halftones, and the fact that this one recreates the effect so effectively within the limitations of FontStruct is admirable. The play on the concept of 20\/20 vision by creating a blurred effect is also a nice visual tie-in to the \u2018twenties\u2019 theme.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>He liked the \u201cMexico Olympics vibe\u201d of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1920702\/db-questura\">db Questura<\/a> and appreciated the full character set, and he also saw something special in <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/fontstructions\/show\/1919052\/nx-chaos\">NX Chaos<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAt first I was on the fence about including this typeface among the highlights of the \u2018twenties\u2019 competition. There were other designs that were executed with more skill, had more complete character support, etc. But I kept coming back to this one because it\u2019s a rare embodiment of pure nihilism in the form of a typeface. It follows a style of glitchy digital graphics right to the brink of complete illegibility, as if to say: \u2018Go to hell. I don\u2019t even care if you can read this\u2019.
