Dear FontStructors,<\/p>\n
Another fun-packed competition is complete, leaving us to celebrate a wonderful assembly of diversely-inspired and inspiring entries.<\/p>\n
As so often in previous competitions, there are simply too many high-quality entries to give each and every one the attention which they merit, so I\u2019d like to congratulate all<\/strong><\/em> participants on their creativity and skill, and encourage everyone to have a long look at all the entries<\/a> to discover those many gems which are not featured in this post.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2013 I don\u2019t entirely see how nocturnal<\/a>\u00a0addresses the \u201ccounter\u201d theme, but,\u00a0nevertheless, it\u2019s a beautiful, clean design from FontStruct\u2019s master of filigree, Art Deco design:\u00a0time.peace<\/a>.<\/p>\n architaraz<\/a>\u2019s KD Spaceband<\/a>\u00a0meanwhile is perhaps the most original and usable entry of all, cleverly exploring and reinventing the spaces enclosed within its glyphs.<\/p>\n Connect 42<\/a> by jonrgrover<\/a> represents all those competitors who chose to explore the gaming counter metaphor, and it\u2019s a simple but playful entry.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2013 I profoundly love the tattered geometry of zcrapedium.<\/a>\u00a0So much so, that you\u2019ll find it lurking in the background of every sample within this post. The variants in the upper case are a great idea, and I can think of plenty of real-world applications for this one.<\/p>\n Below it: the mysterious\u00a0N8Lite<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 but who is nightpegasus<\/a>, its designer? I have my suspicions. Whoever they are, they demonstrate a highly idiosyncratic and expectation-confounding style, of which N8Lite is a great example \u2013 rule-bound yes, but how strange and elusive are those rules!<\/p>\n Serifia la printe<\/a> represents a larger group of excellent, more \u201cclassical\u201d, filled-counter entries. \u201cSerifia\u201d contains many surprising, and indeed inconsistent, design choices, but therein lies the strength of its oddball character.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n \u2013 All three of these entries would likely have fared very well in the Inline Competition<\/a>.<\/p>\n fs psyline<\/a> and KD Hachure<\/a>\u00a0are examples of sophisticated and mature FontStructing \u2013 ready to be moved on into the character-set expansion phase and suitable for all kinds of design applications.<\/p>\n Below them. the charming and ingeniously entitled Owl Circle<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0Waturu Aiso<\/a>\u00a0 has a more mannered, fantastical look.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Last, but not least, in this short and selective tour, we have a group of three diverse entries, beginning with\u00a0NAL<\/a>\u2019s Zirconia<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 its glyphs like the aerial view of an extra-terrestrial base,\u00a0 revealing its intricate, bevelled construction only at larger point sizes.<\/p>\n Geometrica B&L<\/a> turns out to be barely legible, so it\u2019s probably best suited to a logo or short headline, but the patterns of its semaphore-like, cuneiform patternings are wonderful nevertheless.<\/p>\n And finally, geneus1<\/a>\u00a0offered us an array of exceptional contributions to this competition\u2013 all expertly-crafted, things of beauty. You really have to install G1 Recoil<\/a> and start playing with it, in order to fully appreciate the richness of its ornate strudel. Definitely a recommended download.<\/p>\n \u201cbreach<\/a>\u201d by four<\/a> is a standout winner and the \u201cFontStructor\u2019s favourite\u201d for the \u201cCounter\u201d competition. An ingenious warping and rupturing of the boundaries between interior and exterior space, it\u2019s a thought-provoking work of art in itself, and invites extended contemplation.<\/p>\n UPDATE<\/strong>: Some twitter users have pointed out a similarity between \u201cbreach\u201d and the very beautiful commercial release \u201cClip<\/a>\u201d from Setup (previously Urtd<\/a>). Personally I suspect and see coincidental inspiration rather than imitation, but please visit the Setup site<\/a> and make the comparison for yourself.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n O yes! This was love at first sight. Starbird<\/a> by V.Sarela (Yautja)<\/a> is a perfect example of what one might call \u201cgroovy deco\u201d, and I can easily imagine it gracing the worn cover of some favourite \u201970s sci-fi paperback. The contrast of the fine circle with the smooth and heavy fill beneath it is quite sumptuous.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n Elmoyenique<\/a>\u2019s zykowarfare<\/a> reminds me of plastic letter stencils \u2013\u00a0 incorrectly yet playfully filled out perhaps, at the back of a classroom on a hot afternoon. There are scores of intriguing nuggety forms to discover in this one, hidden away amongst its self-interlocking glyphs .<\/p>\n <\/p>\n That\u2019s it!
