{"id":3173,"date":"2018-03-15T09:56:55","date_gmt":"2018-03-15T16:56:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/?p=3173"},"modified":"2018-06-19T00:35:25","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T07:35:25","slug":"google-fonts-sponsors-fontstruct-in-2018","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/2018\/03\/15\/google-fonts-sponsors-fontstruct-in-2018\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Fonts sponsors FontStruct in 2018"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thanks.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3201 size-blog-post-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/thanks-700x243.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"243\" data-wp-pid=\"3179\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dear FontStructors,<\/p>\n<p>Today, with FontStruct\u2019s tenth anniversary imminent, we\u2019re delighted to announce that <a href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Fonts<\/a> will be our principal sponsor in 2018.<\/p>\n<h3>Introducing the SIL Open Font License<\/h3>\n<p>As part of their sponsorship, Google Fonts are helping us to implement a new open-source licensing option on FontStruct \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SIL_Open_Font_License\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The SIL Open Font License<\/a> (OFL) \u2013 which we\u2019re adding to FontStruct today:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/choose-open-font-license.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-blog-post-full wp-image-3184\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/choose-open-font-license-700x625.png\" alt=\"Choose OFL\" width=\"700\" height=\"625\" data-wp-pid=\"3184\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OFL is an open-source license, designed specifically for open-source fonts, and is suitable for designers who would like to make their work freely available with zero restrictions on use, modification or distribution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Contribute to Google Fonts<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But this is more than just another option in the licensing menu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The OFL is the preferred license for contributions to Google Fonts\u2019 renowned and robust directory of open-source, designer, web fonts; so it\u2019s just become much, much easier to contribute your designs directly from FontStruct to Google Fonts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/contribute-to-google-fonts-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-3188 size-blog-post-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/contribute-to-google-fonts-1-700x276.png\" alt=\"Contribute to Google Fonts\" width=\"700\" height=\"276\" data-wp-pid=\"3186\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At time of writing, there are few (if any?) modular, grid-based fonts on Google Fonts. We\u2019re eager to see the first FontStructions appearing on <a href=\"https:\/\/fonts.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fonts.google.com<\/a>\u00a0in 2018, and we hope that some of you will soon be<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0enjoying the massive, global exposure and the state-of-the-art, zero-cost, webfont-delivery service that Google Fonts provides.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How can I contribute my FontStruction to Google Fonts?<\/h3>\n<p>To get started, your FontStruction needs to fulfil a few basic criteria, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It must be an original design, and of <strong>good quality<\/strong> (the ultimate judges of this are the Google Fonts team).<\/li>\n<li>It must be licensed under the OFL.<\/li>\n<li>It must contain, as a minimum, the 215 glyphs listed by <a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/googlefonts\/tools\/blob\/master\/encodings\/latin_unique-glyphs.nam\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google<\/a>. (with the exception of the last 3). You\u2019ll notice these glyphs are now listed as a special character set in the FontStructor.<\/li>\n<li>It must have a simple and unique name, with no copyright or trademark infringements, no initials and no abbreviations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Once everything is ready, you can use the new \u201cContribute to Google Fonts\u201d button on your FontStruction homepage to start the contribution process.<\/p>\n<h3>Helpful Resources<\/h3>\n<p>You will find a new section in our FAQ with a <a href=\"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/faq\/83\/contributing-to-google-fonts\/how-do-i-submit-a-fontstruction-to-google-fonts-step-by-step-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed, step-by-step guide<\/a> to help you get started with contributing your FontStruction to Google fonts. Please read this guide thoroughly before proceeding.
