This was a really challenging competition thematically, but the FontStruct community once again\u00a0proved\u00a0their inventiveness, humour and skill in producing over 40 diverse FontStructions somehow related to the idea of \u201cLove\u201d. Yes, there were a lot of heart shapes, but they were almost always used in an original way or as part of\u00a0a more complex idea. Congratulations to everyone who took part. You’re all winners!<\/p>\n

Lorra Lorra Dates!<\/a>\u00a0(shown above), one of two strong entries\u00a0by NAL<\/a>,\u00a0was one of the most\u00a0conceptually surprising submissions and certainly put a smile on my face. Other conceptually clever entries\u00a0were\u00a0fs pixel heart<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0opipik<\/a>,\u00a0heartbeat<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0ben17<\/a>, and\u00a0Lovers morse code<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0wicci<\/a>. \u2013 Each either barely legible or downright cryptic, they would all lend themselves to\u00a0secretive exchanges of billets-doux.<\/p>\n

The Prizewinners<\/h3>\n

Given the high quality and diversity of the entries for this competition, there are four prizewinners. So, in no particular order, here they are:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0floriitutaAD28<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0jirinvk<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"love-comp-floriituta\"<\/a><\/p>\n

jirinvk<\/a>\u00a0has been creating idiosyncratic, minimalistic FontStructions and using them in their\u00a0design work for many years. Their\u00a0three complementary entries are vaguely floral assemblages of\u00a0amoeba-like modules. Superficially simple and restrained, The\u00a0floriituta<\/a> series\u00a0is a great reminder of how\u00a0it’s still possible to create\u00a0original and attractive designs on a small grid.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0db For You<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0beate<\/a><\/h3>\n

Note to self: Remember to invite\u00a0beate<\/a>\u00a0to be on the judging panel for the next competition so others have a chance of a prize.
\n\u201cdb for you\u201d\u00a0is yet another display of spectacular technical skill and design sensitivity from one of our leading FontStructors. A clear, expressive script, perfect for everyone’s annual declarations of affection.<\/p>\n

3.G1 Lovelines<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0geneus1<\/a><\/h3>\n

\"love-comp-lovelines\"<\/a><\/p>\n

geneus1<\/a> has been spectacularly generous on FontStruct of late: sharing gems from his secret back catalogue on an almost daily basis. He made three strong entries to this competition, any of which could have won, but this one was the people’s favorite, with the most Favorites at the deadline.\u00a0G1 Lovelines<\/a> is a sumptuous piece of gothic hyperbole. The carefree, heady\u00a0excesses of love are well represented here.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0ztrangelovedoc eYe\/FS<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0elmoyenique<\/a><\/h3>\n

A number of\u00a0FontStructors\u00a0looked to the decades\u00a0of love-ins and the \u201csummer of love\u201d for inspiration \u2013\u00a0love peace happiness<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0four<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0G1 paloma<\/a>\u00a0by\u00a0geneus1<\/a>\u00a0for example. You could argue about the legibility of this entry from\u00a0elmoyenique<\/a>, but the extravagant psychadelic curls make each glyph a wonderful trip in itself.<\/span><\/p>\n
