{"id":1735,"date":"2011-04-08T00:03:23","date_gmt":"2011-04-08T07:03:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/?p=1735"},"modified":"2011-05-03T00:58:08","modified_gmt":"2011-05-03T07:58:08","slug":"competition-illustration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/2011\/04\/08\/competition-illustration\/","title":{"rendered":"Competition: Illustration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1738\" title=\"Illustrative FontStructions\" src=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/uploads\/2011\/03\/icons-all_1.jpg\" alt=\"Illustrative FontStructions\" width=\"460\" height=\"306\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After the great success of the first two FontStruct competitions, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/2010\/10\/19\/handmade-competition-results\/\" target=\"_blank\">Handmade<\/a>&#8221; and the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/2010\/03\/23\/sportscomp-winners-wrap-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">SportsComp<\/a>&#8220;, we&#8217;re launching our third competition with the theme of &#8220;<strong>Illustration<\/strong>&#8221; and more great <a href=\"#prizes\">prizes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><!--more-->The Brief<\/h3>\n<p>Many FontStructors concentrate on designing alphabets and letterforms, but the FontStructor has also proven a wonderful tool for creating useful and fun libraries of modular illustrations. We&#8217;d like to invite FontStructors to take a brief holiday from the familiar comforts of the letter, and build some pictures.<\/p>\n<p>Competition entries can be icon fonts, pictogram fonts for a particular purpose, or simply a series of illustrations, built as a FontStruction<strong>. <\/strong>Most importantly, <strong>no letters<\/strong> from real or imaginary writing systems should be included. Alternative forms of symbolic notation such as musical notation, braille or morse code will also not qualify.<\/p>\n<p>You can take your inspiration from anywhere. You may like to take a look at the almost 200 existing top picks in the <a href=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/gallery\/all\/balanced_rating\/descending\/1\/picture_symbol\/any_license\/with_options\/\" target=\"_blank\">picture\/symbol category<\/a> \u2013 not all of these are purely illustrative (some would not qualify as they contain letters) \u2013 but here you will find examples of icon fonts, fonts full of wierd and wonderful characters, pattern fonts, architectural fonts, and fonts consisting entirely of sheep, cars, clocks, flowers, even moustaches!<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"more illustrative FontStructions\" src=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/uploads\/2011\/03\/icons-all_2n.jpg\" alt=\"more illustrative FontStructions\" width=\"460\" height=\"279\" \/><\/h3>\n<h3>Competition time period<\/h3>\n<p>April 8th \u2013 April 29th 2011<\/p>\n<h3>Competition rules<\/h3>\n<p>1. You must be a registered <a href=\"..\/..\/sign_up\">FontStruct user<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2. Your submission(s) must be posted and made \u201cpublic\u201d between April 8th \u2013April 29th 2011.\u00a0Although you are encouraged to share  your submission(s) at any time between these dates, your FontStruction  submission(s) must be public (marked \u201cshare with everyone\u201d) no later  then April 29th at 11pm PST. Additionally, your submission(s) must  remain public until May 13th in order to give the judges enough time  to review all qualifying entries.<\/p>\n<p>3. Your submission(s) must be tagged with a \u201c<strong>IlluComp<\/strong>\u201d  tag. (For fairness, during the competition time period, April 8th to April 29th, no FontStruction with the \u201c<strong>IlluComp<\/strong>\u201d tag will be  awarded a Top Pick or be available for a Featured FontStruction pick.)<\/p>\n<p>4. Your submission(s)\u00a0must be downloadable. If your FontStruction cannot be downloaded, the submission will be disqualified.<\/p>\n<p>5. Your submission must be a newly published FontStruction. Simply  adding the \u201c<strong>IlluComp<\/strong>\u201d tag to an already published font is strictly  prohibited.<\/p>\n<p>6. For each submission, you must post <strong>at least one sample image<\/strong> in the comments of the FontStruction.<\/p>\n<p>7. <strong>No letters in each submission can be MORE THAN 48 bricks high<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>8. FontStruct cloning is permitted but the judges will be looking for original work.<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0You may enter up to three FontStructions to the competition.<\/p>\n<p>10. This is a friendly competition. Cheering, <a href=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/2010\/02\/12\/new-features-favorites-and-improved-tagging\/\">favoriting<\/a> and fun banter is encouraged but cruel and uncivil behavior will not be tolerated.<\/p>\n<p>11. No rules regarding licensing. You may choose any Creative Commons license you like for your FontStruction.<\/p>\n<h3>Judging and announcing the winners<\/h3>\n<p>All qualifying FontStructions will by judged by the FontStruct staff  and guest judges, including Kai Vermehr from <a href=\"http:\/\/hello.eboy.com\/eboy\/\" target=\"_blank\">eBoy<\/a>, between the April 30th to May 6th. Three prizewinners (One winner  and two runners-ups) will be chosen. One of these will be the  FontStructors\u2019 Favorite. Winners will be announced in a FontStruct Blog post on May 13th.<br \/>\n<a name=\"prizes\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Prizes<\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Prizes\" src=\"http:\/\/fontstruct.com\/news\/uploads\/2011\/03\/illu_prizes.jpg\" alt=\"Prizes\" width=\"375\" height=\"177\" \/><\/p>\n<p>First prize is a copy of the coveted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontshop.com\/products\/fontbook\/\" target=\"new\">FontBook<\/a> from our ever generous sponsors, <a href=\"http:\/\/fontshop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">FontShop International<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fontshop.com\/products\/fontbook\/\" target=\"new\">FontBook<\/a> is the most complete digital type reference in the world.
