The FontStruct Poster is now available

News | | November 15th, 2011

100 FontStruct posters are now on sale at Etsy. The price is 10€ plus postage for those whose work appears on the poster, and a madly reasonable 20€ plus postage for everyone else. All proceeds will go towards paying for the printing and admin costs. Any surplus will go towards the further development of FontStruct. You’ll find some preview images in this post. Click on them for larger versions.

FontStruct Poster Dot

The FontStruct Poster was created by Lorenz Fidel Huchthausen aka Tylo, Christian Klier, and Rob Meek in Berlin in 2011. Lorenz and Christian are both students at the Kunsthochschule Weißensee in Berlin. The poster features 129 distinctive modular glyphs from over 80 FontStructors laid out on the FontStruct grid. The emphasis is on celebrating the more, minimal, “classical” style of FontStructing, so no FontStructions which employ filters were included. A FontStruction – Exampla Sans Medium by Shasta – was used for setting the key and other additional text on the poster, and proved how wonderful FontStructions can look in print if tweaked appropriately (thank you optical kerning!).

FontStruct poster key detail

A limited edition of 150 posters was printed in October 2011 on 250g matt, coated paper by Pinguin Druck in Berlin, using the offset technique.  The posters are hand-stamped and numbered on the reverse side. 100 will be sold.

At 63.5cm x 100cm the posters are a few mm over “double royal” size.

FontStruct Poster Complete

As mentioned above, if your work appears on the poster (see list below*) you can use the coupon code “ONTHEPOSTER” at Etsy to get a 50% discount (on one poster only!!!). If you’re not on the poster, the poster is still a bargain at 20€. We’re based in Germany so shipping is not cheap  (5.40€ for Germany, 11.10€ for the EU and €16.60 for anywhere else). We’ll throw a few FontStruct stickers into the tube to hopefully compensate a bit for that. Please use the contact button on the FontStruct Etsy shop page if you have any questions about purchasing, including shipping costs for multiple posters (we can probably put multiple posters in a single tube).

The poster is an inspirational tribute to the fascination of the FontStruct grid and will make a wonderful addition to any FontStructor’s studio wall. Get them while they’re hot!

Wow, great poster! I’ve just ordered one.

I looked a bit and found my E from “musical notation” (the 32nd-note near the bottom). And then I found the S from my “Alien Double” as well. Thank you for featuring me twice!

  2. Rob Meek (meek)

@Cmunk Glad you like the poster. I think you’ve got three glyphs on it.

  3. elmoyenique

Wow! What a gorgeous and great creation! Congrats to all for this wonderful poster. Thank you very much for include me (well, my fonts) in it, boss! What a gift! I want one of these just now! But, well, how can I use the coupon code “ONTHEPOSTER” to get it, pleaseeee? I don’t find how to put it in the Etsy FS page and the poster coast to me like a non-ontheposter person…

  4. elmoyenique

Don’t worry, I found the right place!

    elmoyenique — November 15, 2011 #

  5. Electric Keet

There’s an irony in the fact that, as far as I can tell, the one glyph of mine featured is from my Morse font (from way back before spacing was adjustable, even!) and just last night, I started work on a new version!

    Thanks for including me!

    Electric Keet — November 15, 2011 #

  6. cam.ill

wow.. Nice work, love the grid effect!
Found 1 from “in dust reality” and one from “pictales” Looking forward having this thing on my wall!

    Wonderful!
    Of course i want one!
What a great feeling to be part of this.
    thank you

Nice work! I also found my big glyph “T” at the bottom. Thank you!

@elmo Glad you found it. For anyone else who’s searching, it’s on the right of the “cart” page below “How you’ll pay”.

  10. shasta

Great poster! Would definitely make I nice christmas gift from me to myself…

And I’m particularly honoured that you used Exempla for the additional text. Exactly the kind of application I had envisioned when designing the font, and the fact that I actually only noticed at second glance it was Exempla sort of proves how well fontstructions can work in ‘real-life’ context… (Even though I absolutely second the comment on optical kerning.)

The only thing I have to complain about: Why the heck is Switzerland not included in EU countries?? I know that’s politically accurate, but paying 16.60€ (66% more than the price of the poster!) for shipping across one border just feels like plain discrimination of our bonding issues! ;)

    shasta — November 15, 2011 #

  11. Rob Meek (meek)

@shasta Glad you like. It’s true the shipping costs are shockingly high especially to Switzerland, but I’m not aware of a straightforward alternative to DHL. Maybe you have a friend on the German side of the border. Or cheaper still, you can come and pick up a poster next time you’re in Berlin.

  12. naveenchandru

Oh Great! I love the poster. Thanks!
    I am getting one. :)

Exempla Sans looks really great in this context. Congratulations, shasta! And congratulations to all the featured artist and – most of all – to the poster designers!

Heh, but I wonder: What custom glyph did Tylo and co. use for my username?

(I guess I will have to order one if I want to find out…damn those shipping charges!)

Paging through my public works, I saw, “filters, filters, filters, more filters…” LOL. I can smile knowing there are a small band of brick stacks hiding amongst these poster glyphs.

And thanks for finding one of my works that fits the design restrictions and including it. “F” is for “FontStruct”!

So, when will you be releasing an “Expert Mode” poster? ;)

    will.i.ૐ — November 15, 2011 #

  14. fontcollector

When I was invited to have my work included in the poster, I accepted immediately. Now that I’ve seen how great it looks, I’m so happy to have played a small part in its construction. My thanks to everyone who was involved in the project, and especially to you, Rob!

  15. Rob Meek (meek)

@will.i.ૐ I’m really sorry. I’ve just noticed there’s a mistake in the list of designers and in the emails sent out today. None of your glyphs are on the poster. Your work is undoubtedly some of the best and perhaps the most innovative of all on FontStruct. Your extensive use of filters was the only reason you’re work is not on the poster. Other great designs and FontStructors were also ignored for that reason, and sometimes simply because they didn’t fit into the crazy jigsaw that is the poster. My deepest apologies. I’m going to check that list now.

    Rob Meek (meek) — November 15, 2011 #

  16. Rob Meek (meek)

@will.i.ૐ I checked the list. Only two people were named whose glyphs are not actually on the poster. You, and me! Congratulations to our usurper Raketentim.

    Rob Meek (meek) — November 15, 2011 #

  17. will.i.ૐ

@meek: Really, no need for apologies! And thanks for the courtesy and respect of your sentiments.

Even and especially if I were omitted – the stunning quilt-work design for this poster dictated the choices. I imagine some glyphs just screamed graphically for inclusion (and what a nostalgic journey to remember the sequence of release for many of these brilliant constructions). Some others, as you said, had to fit in like puzzle pieces. Well done on the designers part(s)!

I do believe the third glyph in the lowest row is mine (More Latin Tragedy Titling Capitals’ “F”). There is such a nice range of styles represented; mine here could also be for “Formerly” or “Formality”.

    will.i.ૐ — November 15, 2011 #

  18. will.i.ૐ

Actually, that should read: (More Latin Tragedy Titling Capitals’ “f”).

    will.i.ૐ — November 15, 2011 #

  19. Rob Meek (meek)

@will.i.ૐ You’re right. The F is yours. The credit at the bottom of the poster is incorrect. You’re back on the list but there’s no undoing the ink on paper unfortunately. The glyph is credited to horrorhouse by kix which was on the poster but was later removed. A Tragedy indeed :-(

    Rob Meek (meek) — November 15, 2011 #

  20. igorrossi

Thanks a lot, I just ordered mine.

  21. aphoria

Hey guys…it could worse! I’m paying about $13.80 USD (with the coupon code) and another $23.06 for shipping to the US!

    But it’s worth it!

    aphoria — November 15, 2011 #

  22. cablecomputer

Oh, cool! Although I’m not see one of my fonts there, I’m still really like it!

    cablecomputer — November 15, 2011 #

  23. Rob Meek (meek)

@cablecomputer Glad you like the poster! With over two thousand top picked FontStructions under consideration for the poster it was a nightmare choosing a group that fitted together. Also as work on the poster began almost a year ago, many more recent works were not considered.

    Rob Meek (meek) — November 16, 2011 #

  24. p2pnut

I love the poster … and the very idea of the poster. I have ordered mine and look forward to seeing it ‘in the flesh’.

It will always be a visual reminder of the incredibly talented folk who make up the FS community.

Regarding the P&P. Is that reflective of the postal rates in Germany? If so, it must be very difficult for businesses there. I just received (in the UK) a fairly heavy book from the US and the P&P was just £2.80 ($4.40 or 3.26 euros).

I’m not complaining btw … just curious.

    p2pnut — November 16, 2011 #

  25. jmarquez

Very nice! Its just a pity fonts with filters couldn’t be used, maybe next time. I’m thinking of ordering a copy myself, and hoping I can do it before they run out (only 28 available at the moment)

    jmarquez — November 16, 2011 #

  26. Rob Meek (meek)

@p2pnut thanks for your order. Its waiting for the postman. I’m disappointed by the P&P costs as well. Maybe I should have made the poster more expensive to lessen the shock ;-) I think sending from the US is a lot cheaper, also large vendors (like Amazon) can probably negotiate special rates because they send such large volumes.

    Rob Meek (meek) — November 16, 2011 #

  27. Rob Meek (meek)

@jmarquez Only 50 posters were made available initially. Another 50 can be made available if needs be.

This is great guys. Thanks for including me. Very proud to be a fontstructor! My copy’s in the post but as far as I can see I’ve got three glyphs {W, A and B} on it!

    Thanks guys,

  31. cam.ill

Yeah! recieved the Posters.. Thanks, really love it and the print-and paper -quality is amazing! In my opinion the grid could have been a little thinner but that probably depends on taste and the distance you look at it. (there where no FS stickers tough)

    cam.ill — November 26, 2011 #

  32. Rob Meek (meek)

@Camil Glad you like the poster. We do put stickers in every tube. I suspect they may have landed on the floor at customs – they could easily fall out if someone does open the tube. I’ll send you some more.

  33. p2pnut

Poster has arrived – great looking job. Now all I need is a large enough wall-space to put it on :)

  34. Rob Meek (meek)

@p2pnut Glad you got the poster. It’s (almost) a British Imperial format so it should fit perfectly on your English walls ;-) Anyone outside Europe got their’s yet?

    Rob Meek (meek) — November 29, 2011 #

  35. p2pnut

It’s not the fault of the poster … just that any available space is already taken by paintings and prints. Nature ‘abhors a vacuum’ – and so does my wife! :-)
