Hi, opipik!

Sadly, I was not aware of this contribution, so: thank you!
(We shall see in the future where you were right, I guess…)

A brief review for now: (after your related fonts in 2013-)

• CHRONOLOGY: "NAME" [DETAILS¹]
• 2013-03-09: "micro" [matrix: 3x3; width: var.; sets: all UC + all LC + no num. + 2 sym.]
• 2014-02-11: "fs Everyone sees the font" (<"fs No one sees the font") [matrix: 3x4; width: fixed; sets: all]
• 2014-04-20&21: "fs pxalic" [matrix: 3x5; width: fixed; sets: all UC + all LC + all num. + no sym.]
• 2014-07-23: "fs 3x3 02" [matrix: 3x3; width: mono; sets: all UC + all LC + all num. + 11 sym.]
• 2014-09-03: "fs minimalist-illegible 01" [matrix: 2x4; width: var.!; sets: all UC + all LC + all num. + no sym.]
• 2015-11-23: "fs 3x3 0?" [matrix: 3x4; width: fixed; sets: all UC + all LC + all num. + 7 sym.]

¹ Not written yet: duplicates², set height, grid optim.², style, color, etc.
¹ Not rated yet: legibility, appreciation³, suggestion³, encouragement, etc.
(² I may add a 'dpla test' -as .png- in the future to my comparison folder…)
(³ Persevering effort in general -try again 2x4 }=)- and valuable findings.)

Well, I confirm that my upcoming 'typeface' -or its procedural script- do contains these sizes (as valid basic Ascii - w/o dupe or clumsiness… even more non-Ascii stuff, all seriously ordered and checked, which is 100 % coder-proof on a large scale, and quite aesthetic b.t.w.).

{Tips of the day: 1. a coherent 'micro' font should only be smoothly downgraded from a plainly legible one, where e.g. my larger fonts are 4x5; 2. all the glyph-wise oddities should vanish after the human reader finds the logics, of simple and not too many tricks hopefully!}

Bye!

@Meek: "500 Internal Server Error" at all the downloading processes this evening
(I had to save the screenshots as .png - most of the thumbnails were missing too).

[I could not edit quickly,
so a new post is essential…]

Here are the direct links to day
of opipik's related pages
(his original or cloned fonts):

• 2013-05-10: "fs 3x3"
• 2013-05-29: "fs groszak's dreams"
+
• 2013-03-09: "micro"
• 2014-02-11: "fs Everyone sees the font" (<"fs No one sees the font")
• 2014-04-20&21: "fs pxalic"
• 2014-07-23: "fs 3x3 02"
• 2014-09-03: "fs minimalist-illegible 01"
• 2015-11-23: "fs 3x3 0?"

The other fontstructions are not quite based on minimal matrices
(not 'micro', but many pixellated fonts are interesting to me).

Erratum: "micro"

@Meek: a preview feature, please…

More to be polite*, here is a quick review (thus not checked computationally, which is error-prone)…

• 6 duplicates: "E"="B", "l"="I", "p"="P", "c"="G", "x"="X", ","="i".

• I'll keep the glyphs that are quite ambiguous ("S"~"4", "y"~")", "Z"="I").

• I'll accept your suggestions of inordinate deformations ("g", "k", "s" or "t").

• Pertaining to the lowercase, you might have been influenced by your 'very first font', the one that had two sizes(?). I need less fanciful glyphs in 2017, therefore I was more interested in your choices with the 2 x-height characters ("i", "j", "m", "n", "o", "r", "u", "v", "w", "z").

• Nice-looking trios: mno, uvw, even rst and hij, incidentally or not.

• Good attempts at variable width in "I", "J", "i"/"l", "j", "r"/"s"/"t" and ",".

• I cannot tell you where I am happy (or less interested) without unveiling my own choices and logical tricks (because my 'typeface' is still unreleased)… But a few glyphs of yours would be quite good (and less ambiguous) when mapped to another part of Ascii or/and at another size, while a few other ones are quite logical between UC and LC…

• Total of unique glyphs: 54-6=48/93, i.e. ~52% of basic Ascii. (Not Ascii, not a font… I explained this prerequisite and added a lot more popularizing files to my 'typeface' - a large family of 'micro' fonts.)

• The great lack of codepoints (to complete the -for me- minimal basic Ascii) makes you have enough elbow room to choose the (valid) glyphs without much effort. Pain was not the objective, all right (even though designing a fairly legible Ascii 'micro' font is always a tough experiment).

• Interesting submissions for later… I'll try to add your glyphs when I omitted them- in my .xlsb file about the 3x3 grids.

* I cannot swear I'll comment on your other 'micro' fonts soon (links above), because of the lack of time in my projects. (My own piece of software already costed me countless hundreds of hours, maybe a thousand or more since ca 2013, with proven attempts -retrieved online- back in the early 1990s and personal trials -lost- in the early 1980s…)

Misc. notes about the FontStruct site:
The downloads worked fine today, again. (I have all your related .ttf in their .zip now.)
I remembered that only the original poster could edit his/her messages (which is unfair ;-)).
The 'Dpla' tag is funny. (I really hope that one day, people can read and build messages -not only with pixels- at the 'micro' scale with ease and relative definiteness.)

• [3x3] "fs 3x3" (v2013-05-10):
My only comment was on 2013-05-10.

• [3x3] "fs groszak's dreams" (v2013-05-29):
Still lacking a comment of mine. Ditto on [3x3] "3x3 is possible" (v2013-05-23) by Groszak, at first I'd wish.

• [3x3] "micro" (v2013-03-09):
My last comment is right now on 2017-04-24.

• [3x4] "fs Everyone sees the font" (v2014-02-11):
Still lacking a comment of mine. Beforehand, I have to check quickly whether the cloning only applied to the size of the dots.

+ [3x4] "fs No one sees the font" (v2014-02-11):
Not quite an expected comment of mine (applicable prioritarily right above instead).

• [3x5] "fs pxalic" (v2014-04-21):
This artwork lacked a comment of mine: I am going to paste one there in a minute…

• [3x3] "fs 3x3 02" (v2014-07-23):
Still lacking a comment of mine.

• [2x4] "fs minimalist-illegible 01" (2014-09-03):
Still lacking a comment of mine.

• [3x4] "fs 3x3 0?" (v2015-11-23):
Still lacking a comment of mine.
{By the way, Windows may drop the .ttf (the file can be deceptively absent in the .zip) because of the illegal character in the typeface name (the question mark is illegal for Microsoft -as well as many reserved names b.t.w., which is a quite lame legacy-;"fs-3x3-0_.ttf" can be the automagically renamed file if you use a better file manager/archiver). In general today, as in html, the filenames would be a lot more portable if made only from the lowercase and the hyphen. That's a historical reason why I still often use "x" instead of "×" too.}

New 'micro' font!

• [4x5] "fs nostalgic" (2017-04-29):
Still lacking a comment of mine.

(I am 'dying' to make you believe it is not “impossible” at all as 4x5…)

Many fonts (even very incomplete ones) still need to be reviewed and heartened.

Comment by dpla 5th may 2017

Sorry, opipik, I'll comment on the rest a.s.a.p.!
