@computerable - Very nice recreation. Not sure of your method of gathering typeface examples, but if you are using MAME, you can view the sprites to see the complete set of alphabet, numbers, punctuation (including comma and !), and dingbats. (Press the 4 key, then use the L/R arrow keys to cycle through the sprites.)
If not, you can always rely on the high score initials selection to display any 'missing' letters; newer games like this often allow for numbers and limited punctuation/dingbats in the high score initials.
...And the ! is found at the beginning and end of each mission. On the "Offensive Target" screen, it's at the end of the phrase, 'May you fight bravely !'. ;^)
This could be a good starting point to develop a great pixel stencil. At present, it looks less than ideal, even if this is the original version.
