My FontStruct updated

News | | June 11th, 2015

We updated the “My FontStruct” pages today to use the same layout and technology as the redesigned Gallery pages introduced earlier in the year. Sign in and take a look!

Improved Tagging and Search

You can now quickly and easily edit tags directly on the “My Fontstructions” and “My Favorites” pages.

new-my-fontstruct-tagging

In the new “My FontStruct” you can also sort, filter and search using tags or keywords within your own FontStructions or Favorites, just as you can in the Gallery. We plan to add a public/private filter soon so you can quickly view just the work you’ve released or just the FontStructions you’re working on in secret.

The list of tags at the top of user pages has gone; instead you can use the search box to quickly jump to a tag.

Other improvements

We overhauled the entire “My FontStruct” area – not just the FontStruction listing pages, and added a number of small improvements. For example, there’s a WYSIWYG editor on the profile editing page now – making it easier to add simple HTML to your profile.

What’s next?

The old style gallery pages with flash widgets have gone completely from the site now. Next up for an overhaul are (probably) the FontStruction home pages.

Let us know if you have problems with this update in the comments or via the contact page. Thanks!

Thanks Meek! I’ve been waiting for this update for a while. I do miss using the list of tags as my own personal tag cloud since I have so many and I can look at all of them in alphabetical order. I also miss the ability to change the view of fontstructions on the gallery listing to sample text and user input. The changes are looking good so far.

Is there a way to change the default sort to “Last Edit” instead of “Sharing Date?”

Many thanks for this new update, Mr. Meek! I really like the new look. I also enjoy the way the new tagger works, and the ability to search through and sort my FontStructions.

I agree with geneus1 that it would be handy to have My FontStructions sorted by Last Edit by default. However, when I sort them by Last Edit, I get a seemingly random mix of my public FontStructions mixed with the ones that I have edited recently. Would you be able to fix this?

I also noticed that the “Take a look” link on the live page is broken. Would the proper URL instead be http://fontstruct.com/app_dev.php/private/user/home, or http://fontstruct.com/private/user/home?

Finally, I was scrolling through all of the user pages to see what each looked like, and when I got to the Delete Account page, I saw this:

“You have contributed 1037 shared FontStructions.”

My public number is somewhere around 65, so this seems like a bug to me. It’s not major, but it would be nice to have it fixed. On a side note, is 1037 the total number of FontStructions I have created, whether deleted or not?

I thank you again for all your hard work in improving FontStruct! :)

Thanks for the feedback. I can’t promise anything but I’ll consider your suggestions. “Last Edit” as the default sort order sounds like a good idea.

Thanks for pointing out the bugs, they’ll be fixed soon. And stay away from that Delete Account page!

I like the clean and organised look of the pages. Great to see on every page if there are private Fontstructions; it saves a lot of time when looking for older designs that could be improved for publishing.

Thank you for all the work you have done and for the improvements to make Fontstructing such a pleasurable experience.

So THAT’S why my page looks different tonight! :-)

I second geneus1’s suggestion about adding a way to sort one’s own FontStructions by Last Edit.

Aside from that, thanks, as always, for the constant improvements!

Last Edited is now the default sort order and should be working as expected.

It does indeed work correctly! Thanks for fixing it. However, I have another problem….

When I try to load any page of my FontStructions (or any gallery page, for that matter), it is initially very slow. Then a random few of the FontStruction renders will load, while the rest are left blank. The browser (I tried Firefox, IE, and Chrome) continues to “load” the webpage, but nothing more ever happens, at least for the next 5 minutes.

Also, occasionally the page will not load at all. If I try to go to that page again, it leads into the above problem.

I hope you can get this fixed soon. Thanks again!

The tag delete button is out of alignment by 1 pixel.

@thalamic what browser and OS are you using?

It seems that the Gallery “Everything” section has simply disappeared. Is it a bug or the “new” Fontstruct only allows access to Staff Top Picks ?

The renderer crashed. Seems to be ok now.

It seems that the “EVERYTHING” section has purely disappeared from the Gallery choices. Is it a bug or a new decision ?

@cirque-traumaccord You have to click on the “All” filter in the gallery to see everything. It’s not in the menu at the moment. I may well put it back in the menu, I’m not sure yet.

@meek: I’m for putting it there, definitely.

I’ve emailed you an image for IE, Chrome and FF.

@thalamic. Thanks. Should be fixed in the next few days.

“Everything” will be back in the next few days.

By the way, will the button public/private will come back too ? I found it very useful.

  20. Rob Meek (meek)

“Everything“ is back in the Gallery menu. What do you mean by public/private exactly?

    Rob Meek (meek) — June 16, 2015 #

  21. cirque traumaccord

There was a button when you were in private mode, to get all your public sharings and only them instantly

  22. Rob Meek (meek)

Oh yeh. That will come back along with some additional filters.

The new blog layout looks great! Now I can’t wait until the FontStruction pages, the Live page, and the Home page are overhauled. :)

P.S. When I click on a tag in either my private FontStruction page or any public page, it looks through the gallery for FontStructions, instead of that user’s database. Is this intentional, or something that needs to be fixed?

I see a great improvement overall. The only thing I would change would be the sample text (AaBbCc Handgloves) at the font gallery. Could it be possible that we had some customisation options, like displaying the name of the font or using the former “ABCDEF…”?

  25. Rob Meek (meek)

@ETHproductions. I’m looking forward to overhauling the other pages, and of course the FontStructor itself too. Work has started on the FontStruction pages, but will take a while as it’s a bigger job. You’re right, I would expect tags on user listing pages to link to their thus-tagged FontStructions. I’ll fix that in a future release. I’m also still considering the releated issue of how to replace the tag cloud at the top of user FontStruction listings pages – as missed by @geneus1.

@Isaac. Thanks. Yes, sample text customisation options are planned – both for the font designer and the gallery user.

    The new layout looks great?

Any plans to map the rest of the Latin Extended A, B, and Additional as part of the “Copy to Latin Accents” command? It would cut so many needless hours out of my life and make all our projects infinitely more usable.
