Brick by brick: News about FontStruct

FontStruct in Transit II

News | | June 7th, 2009

We did some maintenance work on the servers today.

During the first year of FontStructing, as the bricks piled up, our servers buckled a few times under the load. This sometimes happened without warning and for days at a time, and caused some understandable annoyance. We’re doing a lot of work at the moment to try and avoid this in the future. A large part of this work is now complete.

What’s changed? Hopefully nothing noticeable ;-)  but let us know if you spot any glitches.

Download Problems

Many of you will have noticed problems with downloading more complex FontStructions recently. We’re aware of this and it is next on our list of things to work on.

Ack, I saw this post after sending you an e-mail, Rob. I have a glitch to report: my FontStructions are no longer listed in the order that they were modified (i.e., with the most recent change at the top). The current “order” has no apparent organizing principle behind it! :-D

Thank you! FontStruct is just an empty shell without your work and that of all FontStructors.
The glitch with the listing order should be fixed now.

hey, thanks for all the help with getting a few of my fonts to dl. there may be a problem with the sort filter. i get a blank screen when i try to sort on any selection. otherwise, keep up the great work. i can’t wait to see what you guys are planning :)

yes, an unforeseen side effect of the recent changes to the site is that a lot more downloads are working. you may have to go, brew, and drink a hot beverage while you’re waiting for it, but there seems to be a much better chance it will arrive. the download problems aren’t solved fully yet but we’re on it. i can’t see a problem with the sort filter. has anyone else seen this?

Heya! I can’t seem to get past the sign-in page, I keep getting dropped after I click ‘submit’. I’ve tried using different browsers but the same error occurs. The definition of online insanity, perhaps?

What I’m seeing on the sort filter issue…

There appears to be a change in the way the system determines the order. Before, when you logged in, I’m pretty sure it was displayed with the font that you had edited most recently at the top.

Now it appears that the font that was modified last is displayed first… So if someone rates or downloads your font, it changes the order.

Anyway, that’s what I think I’m seeing. Thanks again for all your hard work.

i submitted this before about the filter. i used to be able to display a listing of my fonts by # of download but now all i get is a white screen. this is the url that is displayed in the address bar:
    http://fontstruct.com/gallery/all/downloads/descending/1/any_category/any_license/with_options/funk_king.

this is not a big item, but kind of frustrating since it used to work for me but doesn’t now. thanks.

yes, just like before. thanks. and you’re doing an incredible job. i can imagine growing fs is challenging. management should be credited with hiring such a talented individual as yourself and us members should count ourselves lucky that fs has been “righted” and is now feeling like home sweet home again. welcome and best wishes.

np. works great. now i noticed a difference in how fonts are listed on the myfontsruct page. they used to be by date of last change, now it seems they are by creation date. i liked the other way better, that way when working on a font, it stays at the top of the list. if a change, then i’ll get used to it. maybe consider putting the same search filter on the gallery page here. that way we could search our own libraries which would show unshared fonts. but some search function is needed on myfontstruct i think. thanks again.
