I was influenced by the fonts used in old horror film posters from the 1960's, examples include 'Atom Age Vampire' and 'The Damned'. I have taken standard lettering and removed chunks, applied shading and drawn the outlines in an unstable manner to evoke violence and gore. The title is a reference to the tagline on the poster for 'The Night of the Living Dead'.This%20font%20was%20created%20in%20response%20to%20the%20theme%20of%20%27Dangerous%27.%20I%20was%20influenced%20by%20the%20fonts%20used%20in%20old%20horror%20film%20posters%20from%20the%201960%27s%2C%20examples%20include%20%27Atom%20Age%20Vampire%27%20%20and%20%27The%20Damned%27.%20I%20have%20taken%20standard%20lettering%20and%20removed%20chunks%2C%20applied%20shading%20and%20drawn%20the%20outlines%20in%20an%20unstable%20manner%20to%20evoke%20violence%20and%20gore.%20The%20title%20is%20a%20reference%20to%20the%20tagline%20on%20the%20poster%20for%20%27The%20Night%20of%20the%20Living%20Dead%27.

Norse Runes and their links to ‘dangerous’ Vikings, Celts and Historic Warriors led me to create this font based on the angles and ‘sharpness’ of weapons and original runic alphabet shapes.

The font is very readable but would probably only be used for a bold title for a book (including sub-titles) based on history or a poster for bands, events or even propaganda posters.

I was looking at the word Dangerous. In the beginning I looked at broken things, construction sites, sharp tools, thorns etc. until I narrowed down my themes to sharp objects and the swift way that a knife can cut paper. Looking at this fast movement I tried to minimise the number of lines that I used in my typeface. In my opinion this font can be used for promotional ‘danger’ posters or advertisement. Ransom note lettering, stencils, silkscreen printing and the appropriation of current cultural imagery aided the movement to deliver its important message of rebellion. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Starting off with the theme "Dangerous", my focus for this project drifted to the definitions of both “rebellion” and “anarchy”. This naturally led me to the Punk movement and how it’s graphic style has been adopted into contemporary design practice. These graphics were often rough, raw, weathered and distressed- all of which I’ve tried to incorporate into my own type’s design. Ironically, the fact that this “style” is being used for commercial gain goes against the very foundations of Punk itself. This realisation spurred on the font’s name “Fashionably Anarchic”.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This typeface would be best utilised in consideration to posters, flyers and possibly book covers (providing the content matches the attitude of the font). Thank you very much, all comments are welcome!%22Fashionably%20Anarchic%22%20is%20a%20typeface%20inspired%20by%20the%201970s%20Punk%20movement-%20paying%20notice%20to%20the%20political%2C%20economical%20and%20social%20issues%20of%20the%20time%20and%20how%20they%20affected%20what%20we%20commonly%20refer%20to%20as%20the%20%E2%80%9CPunk%20Aesthetic%E2%80%9D.%20Ransom%20note%20lettering%2C%20stencils%2C%20silkscreen%20printing%20and%20the%20appropriation%20of%20current%20cultural%20imagery%20aided%20the%20movement%20to%20deliver%20its%20important%20message%20of%20rebellion.%20~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~%0D%0A%0D%0AStarting%20off%20with%20the%20theme%20%22Dangerous%22%2C%20my%20focus%20for%20this%20project%20drifted%20to%20the%20definitions%20of%20both%20%E2%80%9Crebellion%E2%80%9D%20and%20%E2%80%9Canarchy%E2%80%9D.%20%20This%20naturally%20led%20me%20to%20the%20Punk%20movement%20and%20how%20it%E2%80%99s%20graphic%20style%20has%20been%20adopted%20into%20contemporary%20design%20practice.%20These%20graphics%20were%20often%20rough%2C%20raw%2C%20weathered%20and%20distressed-%20all%20of%20which%20I%E2%80%99ve%20tried%20to%20incorporate%20into%20my%20own%20type%E2%80%99s%20design.%20Ironically%2C%20the%20fact%20that%20this%20%E2%80%9Cstyle%E2%80%9D%20is%20being%20used%20for%20commercial%20gain%20goes%20against%20the%20very%20foundations%20of%20Punk%20itself.%20This%20realisation%20spurred%20on%20the%20font%E2%80%99s%20name%20%E2%80%9CFashionably%20Anarchic%E2%80%9D.%20%0D%0A~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~%0D%0A%0D%0AThis%20typeface%20would%20be%20best%20utilised%20in%20consideration%20to%20posters%2C%20flyers%20and%20possibly%20book%20covers%20%28providing%20the%20content%20matches%20the%20attitude%20of%20the%20font%29.%20Thank%20you%20very%20much%2C%20all%20comments%20are%20welcome%21
7 downloads7%20downloads71 comments1%20comments135 glyphs35%20glyphs35My project was to create a font around a particular stimuli word - mine being 'dangerous'. My main inspiration came from a quote from my scuba diving instructor as he said "never touch anything in the water that is beautiful as all the beautiful things are the most dangerous". When I think of this quote and apply it to things I could see on a daily basis, I think of a rose, a beautiful flower with sharp thorns. The idea for my font was to create not a beautiful font, but a strong looking font with something beautiful yet harmful wrapped around it.My%20project%20was%20to%20create%20a%20font%20around%20a%20particular%20stimuli%20word%20-%20mine%20being%20%27dangerous%27.%20My%20main%20inspiration%20came%20from%20a%20quote%20from%20my%20scuba%20diving%20instructor%20as%20he%20said%20%22never%20touch%20anything%20in%20the%20water%20that%20is%20beautiful%20as%20all%20the%20beautiful%20things%20are%20the%20most%20dangerous%22.%20When%20I%20think%20of%20this%20quote%20and%20apply%20it%20to%20things%20I%20could%20see%20on%20a%20daily%20basis%2C%20I%20think%20of%20a%20rose%2C%20a%20beautiful%20flower%20with%20sharp%20thorns.%20The%20idea%20for%20my%20font%20was%20to%20create%20not%20a%20beautiful%20font%2C%20but%20a%20strong%20looking%20font%20with%20something%20beautiful%20yet%20harmful%20wrapped%20around%20it.
It's part of our animal instinct - when we come across something dangerous, our fight-or-flight instinct kicks in. I surveyed a class of students and asked them what they found frightening. The responses were varied, and although some were predictable, and others highly unusual, I found a common theme in many; things that bite, claw, and sting. With this in mind I started to design this font using shapes inspired by both the teeth of modern domestic dogs and of wild wolves. That's why I chose to name it 'Fenrir' - the great wolf of Norse mythology.People%20are%20afraid.%20That%27s%20what%20makes%20us%20human.%20It%27s%20part%20of%20our%20animal%20instinct%20-%20when%20we%20come%20across%20something%20dangerous%2C%20our%20fight-or-flight%20instinct%20kicks%20in.%20I%20surveyed%20a%20class%20of%20students%20and%20asked%20them%20what%20they%20found%20frightening.%20The%20responses%20were%20varied%2C%20and%20although%20some%20were%20predictable%2C%20and%20others%20highly%20unusual%2C%20I%20found%20a%20common%20theme%20in%20many%3B%20things%20that%20bite%2C%20claw%2C%20and%20sting.%20With%20this%20in%20mind%20I%20started%20to%20design%20this%20font%20using%20shapes%20inspired%20by%20both%20the%20teeth%20of%20modern%20domestic%20dogs%20and%20of%20wild%20wolves.%20That%27s%20why%20I%20chose%20to%20name%20it%20%27Fenrir%27%20-%20the%20great%20wolf%20of%20Norse%20mythology.
This was an experiment in using FontStruct without filters. It reminded me of why I use filters 90% of the time. There aren't as many solutions possible.
Periculum died after a bad copy and paste malfunction. The resurrection process was like walking on eggshells, but here it is. Lowercase was rushed a bit just to get it out there for Aphoria.
The smoothness comes with the combination of preview scaling and anti-aliasing. It has to be scaled at just the right size to look convincing for on-screen purposes. Same in Illustrator. Curious, I opened it in FontLab Studio. Turns out, the characters that have a half-wide brick left of the left edge in FontStruct are another half-brick-width over in the TrueType file.
