It is themed 'dynamic', however once i started research and mind mapping i went more in the direction of dynamic dance and movement; which is what lead me to looking at ribbons and ballet. I wanted to bring the letterforms back towards the dynamic theme, so decided to make the sides and corners more angular. With some of the letters i tried to create a joined up handwriting feel, inspired by the way that ribbon floats and would fall if it was making the letters naturally. I chose Saintly. Throughout my research, I looked at the architecture of churches, the similarities in there designs and how certain shapes could easily be recognised as being linked to that type of architecture. I then started looking at Dante Alghieri's Divine Comedy and the illustrations by John Flaxman and Gustav Doré. At first it became difficult trying to figure out how to implement this into a font, but then I took on a challenge, Would it be possible to get Doré's engravings into the font. Then another thought crossed my mind, how do images look when compressed to low pixel quality sizes and how they are still recognisable. So I did that, I bought a book of Doré's illustrations for the divine comedy, and they started to build into the letters. Each letter also has this Art Deco like area to it which went well for the Stain Glass Window approach I also wanted in the design. It took a lot of practice to get this right, and there was a fair amount of copy and pasting here and there but overall I'm quite happy with the turn out. My theme word was 'chaos' I began exploring the meaning of this word. This led to several experiments exploring how I could use marks or patterns to express chaos. My favourite experiment used the stencil of the letter and then used drops of ink, the negative space of the letter was left once the stencil was removed and surrounding this were random drops of ink. Each letter was therefore unique so there was already an element of chaos in the typeface, but I also felt the effect of ink created an energetic feeling which felt chaotic. From the beginning I wanted to create a unique design, looking at sound I decided to use my voice as the starting point. After recording myself pronouncing the alphabet and uploading it to a sound editor I looked at the different shapes and patterns it created. This was my voice that was unique to me and was the inspiration for the typeface. I then researched fonts and looked at bold, chunky designs which could hold the pattern without taking too much away from the letter form as it was important to me that my design was still legible. I decided to use the corresponding sound with the letter (i.e. the A has my pronunciation of the letter running through it)making it different from anything I have seen before. Please comment and share your opinions. I chose to look at the theme 'Decay', and was inspired by Andy Goldsworthy, Anna Garforth, Daniele Del Nero, and natural occurrences such as rotting fruit and mould. I grew mould and made observational sketches, experimenting with a range of drawing techniques. I then drew out my font, and used graph paper to translate it into pixels. During my research, I have been exploring "Energy" from different points of view, from the essence of it, to scientific bases and other concepts like positive and negative energy in different contexts. The work has been inspired by the scientific way, more concretely in Nikola Tesla's experiments in the area. I found interesting how energy is created in a specific point and spreads creating different shapes. The typeface is also inspired by "Futura" typeface due to the time relationship between the creation of it and the experimentation period of Tesla. This is meant to be a display typeface, but I think it can work in a medium or big size. The brief we were given was to design a typeface using a key word, mine being 'ornate'. My ideas initially stemmed from architecture and then to the tilling within.
