W. Godwin (1833-1886) born in Stokes Croft, Bristol. He was influential in the Aesthetic movement that created "the look" of Victorian Britain. He began his career working in the strongly polychromatic "Ruskinian Gothic" style of mid-Victorian Britain, inspired by The Stones of Venice, then moved on to provide designs in the "Anglo-Japanese taste" of the Aesthetic Movement and Whistler's circle in the 1870s. A friend of Oscar Wilde, James Whistler and William Burges he was also the father of revered actress Dame Ellen Terrys illegitimate child. Godwin's influence can be detected in the Arts and Crafts Movement. To judge from his sketchbooks at the Victoria and Albert Museum, one might have expected an eclectic historicist, but Godwin, by no means a tame reproducer of antiquarian Gothic designs, was among the first to extend the European design repertory to include the arts of Japan, which had been opened to the Western world in 1853. His work is undergoing a revival since he was jokingly adopted as the patron saint of Stokes Croft by community action group the Peoples Republic of Stokes Croft. The group aim to to put some of his finest architectural achievements in the city back to good use as many of them despite being buildings of some historical significance lie empty and unused. His design work is being reincorporated into the urban landscape through the community organisation's programme of public art and his style has recently been adopted by a number of Street Artists including Dones and Felix Braun so his work is undergoing some kind of a revival. The glyphs are all based on the patterns from his sketchbooks.Typeface%20based%20on%20the%20work%20of%20Victorian%20Designer%20and%20Architect%20E.%20W.%20Godwin%20%281833-1886%29%20born%20in%20Stokes%20Croft%2C%20Bristol.%20He%20was%20influential%20in%20the%20Aesthetic%20movement%20that%20created%20%22the%20look%22%20of%20Victorian%20Britain.%20He%20began%20his%20career%20working%20in%20the%20strongly%20polychromatic%20%22Ruskinian%20Gothic%22%20style%20of%20mid-Victorian%20Britain%2C%20inspired%20by%20The%20Stones%20of%20Venice%2C%20then%20moved%20on%20to%20provide%20designs%20in%20the%20%22Anglo-Japanese%20taste%22%20of%20the%20Aesthetic%20Movement%20and%20Whistler%27s%20circle%20in%20the%201870s.%20A%20friend%20of%20Oscar%20Wilde%2C%20James%20Whistler%20and%20William%20Burges%20he%20was%20also%20the%20father%20of%20revered%20actress%20Dame%20Ellen%20Terrys%20illegitimate%20child.%20Godwin%27s%20influence%20can%20be%20detected%20in%20the%20Arts%20and%20Crafts%20Movement.%20To%20judge%20from%20his%20sketchbooks%20at%20the%20Victoria%20and%20Albert%20Museum%2C%20one%20might%20have%20expected%20an%20eclectic%20historicist%2C%20but%20Godwin%2C%20by%20no%20means%20a%20tame%20reproducer%20of%20antiquarian%20Gothic%20designs%2C%20was%20among%20the%20first%20to%20extend%20the%20European%20design%20repertory%20to%20include%20the%20arts%20of%20Japan%2C%20which%20had%20been%20opened%20to%20the%20Western%20world%20in%201853.%20His%20work%20is%20undergoing%20a%20revival%20since%20he%20was%20jokingly%20adopted%20as%20the%20patron%20saint%20of%20Stokes%20Croft%20by%20community%20action%20group%20the%20Peoples%20Republic%20of%20Stokes%20Croft.%20The%20group%20aim%20to%20to%20put%20some%20of%20his%20finest%20architectural%20achievements%20in%20the%20city%20back%20to%20good%20use%20as%20many%20of%20them%20despite%20being%20buildings%20of%20some%20historical%20significance%20lie%20empty%20and%20unused.%20His%20design%20work%20is%20being%20reincorporated%20into%20the%20urban%20landscape%20through%20the%20community%20organisation%27s%20programme%20of%20public%20art%20and%20his%20style%20has%20recently%20been%20adopted%20by%20a%20number%20of%20Street%20Artists%20including%20Dones%20and%20Felix%20Braun%20so%20his%20work%20is%20undergoing%20some%20kind%20of%20a%20revival.The%20glyphs%20are%20all%20based%20on%20the%20patterns%20from%20his%20sketchbooks.

The design brief was to create a typeface using the key word; 'ornate'. I have taken heavy influence from gothic fonts and architecture, looking in particular at religion and religious texts. Our first project this year was to design a typeface based around a word of our choosing. I opted for ‘Pompous’, as it stood out to me from the list. During the project I visited Bristol Cathedral several times, and spent time in and around Bridgwater, looking at anything that I found to be pompous, such as cast-iron work and Baroque architecture. My final design is influenced by Gothic typefaces and raised lead tombstones/plaques. The name ‘Delectatio Morosa’ is Latin for peevish delight, which I discovered whilst looking at different Latin phrases.I%20am%20a%20first%20year%20student%20at%20the%20University%20of%20the%20West%20of%20England.%20Our%20first%20project%20this%20year%20was%20to%20design%20a%20typeface%20based%20around%20a%20word%20of%20our%20choosing.%20I%20opted%20for%20%E2%80%98Pompous%E2%80%99%2C%20as%20it%20stood%20out%20to%20me%20from%20the%20list.%20During%20the%20project%20I%20visited%20Bristol%20Cathedral%20several%20times%2C%20and%20spent%20time%20in%20and%20around%20Bridgwater%2C%20looking%20at%20anything%20that%20I%20found%20to%20be%20pompous%2C%20such%20as%20cast-iron%20work%20and%20Baroque%20architecture.%20My%20final%20design%20is%20influenced%20by%20Gothic%20typefaces%20and%20raised%20lead%20tombstones%2Fplaques.%20The%20name%20%E2%80%98Delectatio%20Morosa%E2%80%99%20is%20Latin%20for%20peevish%20delight%2C%20which%20I%20discovered%20whilst%20looking%20at%20different%20Latin%20phrases.
