The inspiration was a typeface from the French type foundry Peignot. Identified as "No. 1229" in their Lettres Fantaises of 1896, it sports a very fine side shadow, which I've attempted to re-create here. (I found the "No. 1229" sample on Hoefler & Frere-Jones' blog - fifth image from the top.) This FontStruction is split in two to make downloading possible.
