8 downloads8%20downloads81 comments1%20comments1213 glyphs213%20glyphs213A favorite of 2 usersA%20favorite%20of%202%20users2Here is the fourth -- and final -- unique font to come from the ImageWriter II. I had a bit of difficulty trying to copy this from a standard printout using my ImageWriter II's without manipulation. Each character in the ImageWriter II's "Near Letter Quality" (NLQ) mode jammed a 16x14 character into what would normally be an 7x7 template.

I wound up figuring out that the ImageWriter printed each character's odd-numbered pixel rows before printing out the even-numbered pixel rows. Ultimately, I caught a rather (un)lucky break after the printer would mess up after the odd-numbered pixel row printout. This worked out because I was able to separate the alternating rows, then I spliced them back together.

Getting back to the font's attributes, ImgWriter NLQ, much like my previous ImgWriter entries, features characters that were not a part of the original design -- accented capital letters, the "fi" and "fl" ligatures, the yen and Euro symbols, fractions, et. al. The only character in this font that is not monospaced is the ellipses (or "dot-dot-dot"); this was made to be a double-spaced character to cut down on the white space between periods.

A little Jobs/Wozniak drama from the development story of the game Breakout:

"Breakout, a discrete logic (non-microprocessor) game, was conceptualized by Nolan Bushnell and Steve Bristow, after the latter had "rejoined" Atari after the merge of Atari subsidiary Kee Games.

"Al Alcorn was assigned as the project manager, and began development with Cyan Engineering in 1975. The same year, Alcorn assigned Steve Jobs to design a prototype. Jobs was offered USD$750, with an extra $100 each time a chip was eliminated from the prospected design. Jobs promised to complete a prototype within four days. Jobs noticed his friend Steve Wozniak—employee of Hewlett-Packard—was capable of producing designs with a small number of chips, and invited him to work on the hardware design with the prospect of splitting the $750 wage.

"The original deadline was met after Wozniak didn't sleep for four days straight. In the end 50 chips were removed from Jobs' original design. This equated to a $5000 USD bonus, which Jobs kept secret from Wozniak, instead only paying him $375."

10 downloads10%20downloads1099 glyphs99%20glyphs99A minimalist 3x5 ASCII pixel font intended to be used in a 4x6 character cell. A modern 1280x1024 screen could thus show 320 columns of 170 rows of text in this font.

Its very difficult to get even the standard ASCII characters into a font this size. Adding accents would be a real challenge, and I'm sure many Unicode characters would be flatly impossible, so don't expect this font to be expanded much.A%20minimalist%203x5%20ASCII%20pixel%20font%20intended%20to%20be%20used%20in%20a%204x6%20character%20cell.%20A%20modern%201280x1024%20screen%20could%20thus%20show%20320%20columns%20of%20170%20rows%20of%20text%20in%20this%20font.%0D%0A%0D%0AIts%20very%20difficult%20to%20get%20even%20the%20standard%20ASCII%20characters%20into%20a%20font%20this%20size.%20Adding%20accents%20would%20be%20a%20real%20challenge%2C%20and%20I%27m%20sure%20many%20Unicode%20characters%20would%20be%20flatly%20impossible%2C%20so%20don%27t%20expect%20this%20font%20to%20be%20expanded%20much.
