Along with Wim Crouwel and Josef Albers, Jurrian Schrofer (1926 - 1990) was among the Bauhaus pioneers of grid-based modular typography and design.

Schrofer's work experimented with type, light, and color and focused on mathematical shapes and pattern.

From the book ‘Dutch Type’ by Jan Middendorp:

“Schrofer made several attempts to create complete typefaces - one of which was wittily called Sans serious - but this was never his goal. ‘Is it necessary’, he wrote, ‘to make complete alphabets with upper- and lowercase, figures, diacritics and seriously adorned with a name, when the aim is merely a formal investigation into basic recipes’ Schrofer's domain was never the design of typographic alphabets, to be used by other designers, but always the creation of letterforms ‘made to measure’ as part of his own designs of - mainly - book covers and postage stamps. He created a rectangular alphabet as the basic element of his ever-changing covers - each based of the same grid but colored differently - for a series of scientific books, ‘Les textes sociologiques’ from Mouton Publishers. He made sophisticated pixel-based letters, all drawn by hand, and experimented with photographic screens as a means of distinguishing simplified letterforms from the background. He created logotypes built from custom-made letterforms, based on rectangular grids.”

“In his booklet ‘Letters op maat’ (‘Type made to measure’, 1987), Schrofer presented many of his experimental alphabets from the 1960s and '70s. The booklet was part of a series of goodwill publications edited by Wim Crouwel for Lecturis Printers, Eindhoven.”

Read more from ‘Dutch Type’.

6 downloads6%20downloads61 comments1%20comments130 glyphs30%20glyphs30As part of my Graphic Design brief at UWE I was asked to design a font based on the word 'Curve'. I wanted to design a typeface that uses the negative space and creates a curve from consistent shapes, hence only using a select set of pixels. This also strongly links to my research into ceramic sets where curves were introduced strongly during post war times in 1945 - 1960s. I was inspired by the sculpture work of Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth in particular, and feel that the font has produced its own ceramic set with a flow throughout the typeface created within the negative space.As%20part%20of%20my%20Graphic%20Design%20brief%20at%20UWE%20I%20was%20asked%20to%20design%20a%20font%20based%20on%20the%20word%20%27Curve%27.%20I%20wanted%20to%20design%20a%20typeface%20that%20uses%20the%20negative%20space%20and%20creates%20a%20curve%20from%20consistent%20shapes%2C%20hence%20only%20using%20a%20select%20set%20of%20pixels.%20This%20also%20strongly%20links%20to%20my%20research%20into%20ceramic%20sets%20where%20curves%20were%20introduced%20strongly%20during%20post%20war%20times%20in%201945%20-%201960s.%20I%20was%20inspired%20by%20the%20sculpture%20work%20of%20Henry%20Moore%20and%20Barbara%20Hepworth%20in%20particular%2C%20and%20feel%20that%20the%20font%20has%20produced%20its%20own%20ceramic%20set%20with%20a%20flow%20throughout%20the%20typeface%20created%20within%20the%20negative%20space.

The main alphabet, numbers, and some of the punctuation (the period, the apostrophe, and the T-shaped ampersand) are accurate to the original dot-matrix displays. However, much of the punctuation had to be improvised (there is no evidence of a question mark or comma being used on these scoreboards), as are the accented characters.Here%27s%20a%20throwback%20and%20a%20tribute%20to%20the%20old%20scoreboards%20of%20Dodger%20Stadium%20and%20the%20Astrodome.%0D%0A%0D%0AThe%20main%20alphabet%2C%20numbers%2C%20and%20some%20of%20the%20punctuation%20%28the%20period%2C%20the%20apostrophe%2C%20and%20the%20T-shaped%20ampersand%29%20are%20accurate%20to%20the%20original%20dot-matrix%20displays.%20%20However%2C%20much%20of%20the%20punctuation%20had%20to%20be%20improvised%20%28there%20is%20no%20evidence%20of%20a%20question%20mark%20or%20comma%20being%20used%20on%20these%20scoreboards%29%2C%20as%20are%20the%20accented%20characters.
