Prior to the invention of the printing press in the second half of the 15th century, hand-made copies of texts and books (manuscripts) were the only system for preserving and transmitting knowledge, and complemented learning by heart, which played a much more important role then than it does today. I took a more digitalised approach, but still not straying away from its calligraphic character.

Ghosting is a font I designed for my graphic course to evoke a sense of decay and fading. Inspired by the eerie and fleeting nature of disappearing text, each character has a subtle degradation effect, as if the letters are slowly vanishing into the background. Drawing on the concept of "ghosting" from Kindle pages, this font is perfect for themes that explore impermanence, mystery, or the passage of time.

“8-Bit Blackletter” by Isaac Lawrence

8-Bit Blackletter evokes the feel of a traditional newspaper masthead, which often feature bold, blackletter typefaces to signify heritage and trust. By combining this classic and more analoge style with the pixelated digital aesthetic, this creates a nostaligc yet contemporary feel, blending the historical weight of print journalistm with the blocky, simplified look of digital type. This makes it perfect for design referancing both past and present.

“Pisces Script” by Alexandra Suruceanu (a2-suruceanu)

My typeface was inspired from the fluid movement of fish, giving it a liquid, almost hypnotic feel. The brief asked us to look to history and retro typography, and while I did, I chose to go the opposite route. In the past type designers had to physically create the type out of wood or metal and the limiting aspects of the materials resulted in square letters and straight lines. Today’s digital tools allow us to break free from those restrictions, which made it possible for me to create a typeface that embraces round, unconventional curves.

My intention for this font was to combine both English and Korean aesthetics. I made this font using the symbols of the Korean alphabet called Hangul specifically in a calligraphic style. It is named Seoche which is the romanization of ‘typeface’ in Korean.

This font has clean, modern lines and decorative accents which are subtle yet set the style perfectly.

Luxurious and visually striking, Slim Deco is set in all caps and therefore best suited for larger sizes, such as headline copy, magazine covers, movie titles, brand identities, coffee shop menus, posters etc.

This font takes you back to the roaring 1920s, the clinking of champagne glasses, the sound of jazz music and the bustling of people at fabulous parties. No matter how you use Slim Deco it will be seen as a glamorous and distinct font with strong shapes and architectural leanings that will creative an eye catching design.
