It was inspired by spray painted protests and the textures and inconsistency of hand-painted placards. Seeing people standing together, holding their placards high created a sense of hope that change and reforms could be made to create a more just and equal society.

“Isolation” by Esme Dale (EsmeDale1)

After watching a documentary on how the elderly are often lonely and forgotten about, it inspired me to create this font detailing the feeling of isolation and becoming disconnected from a community.

The circles that make up the font represent individuals in a community. I chose to have a number of the circles grouped, then others separated, illustrating how one can be surrounded by people but still feel isolated and alone. As this is a common issue in the world today, I found it appropriate to portray this struggle, especially with current world-wide events.

I chose to then focus on the new Joker film and the new character Joaquin Phoenix had created. The font used for the Joker advertisment was really impressive however I felt as though it didn't really do his character justice. This font was a way for me to better illustrate The Joker's new character.

For this, I poured water onto different surfaces/objects with varying shapes to capture the cascading effect as reference images. Originally, I was first inspired by watercolour strokes to make a gradient effect, which developed into the idea of water fountains used in contemporary architecture.

The style is unconventional and unpredictable. Jamie Reid created a lot of typographic pieces using magazine cutouts which is something I also wanted to replicate in this font.

I took inspiration from heavy metal/rock album covers and tried to recreate the same irregular/jarring lettering they do. To do this I painted letters quickly on varying sizes of paper and translated this onto fontstruct to get a rough/rushed look.

For this I looked into coral reefs and sea anemone, then developed ideas through print making with acrylic paint and sponges. The type face is inspired by the flowing nature of the sea anemone and how some sea creatures/ plants grow upwards towards the sun. Eventually the type began to look more like flames/ smoke than a plant, which I decided to focus on instead. This shows how a project can completely change from the initial idea and just how it is important to always develop further taking into account others opinions and thoughts.

I was inspired by the consistency of food products, especially bubblegum. To create these letters, I created 3D bubblegum letters by chewing and stretching the gum and sticking it on paper. I based this font off these 3D letters. It looks better zoomed out. I hope you like it!

I started with drawing the letterforms in ink using a rolled up leaf. The results were twig-like marks which reminded me of the illustrations from 'A Monster Calls' so I developed the letters thinking how they could work alongside this or another story. The name 'This Wild Earth' is taken from the book and I think reflects the scratchy and bold feel of the typeface.
