The simplicity of the design is striking and mesmerizing. The monospace nature make the design replete with design possibilities. The sample evokes Mayan influence as well as those QR codes. Maybe the T could have one block less on either side of the lower... uh...serif.
Seeing the B have a negative F makes me think that a whole set of negative space characters might also be a possibility. The G and the 6 are the same, BTW, but other than flowing the line in an awkward motion, I don't see what else could be done to differentiate them. As are Z and 2. But, aha!, maybe it was your intention to not differentiate them.
I can sense a great deal of fun was had creating this. :-) How about creating a set of patterns based on the characters and the square boundary?
Nice shot, I love this one, particularly your solution to avoid white space with the T.
This is cool. Thalamic covered anything else I might have said.
@thalamic: I'm with you. I think this one is a lot of fun. I think both the squared, monospaced nature of the typeface along with the interlocking monoline shapes makes this one pregnant with design potential. I could definitely see a whole series of patterns based on these shapes.
98% of the design is still straight up Schrofer. For this series I'd like to keep it true to his forms so only minor adjustments were made to the alphabet. The only letter shapes I've modified from the original Sans Serious I are the 'x' and 'v'. If you look at the two you'll see why I had to make those changes.
@igorrossi: The T is my favorite (-:
Your scholarly tributes point us toward an art and a life lived and shared more fully. These diligent investigations of our passions lead us irresistibly to a potent place of self-reflection. You returned to us with such great gifts, telling chapter by chapter a riveting tale of how you honed your craft, how you carried forth the amulet of an elder in the spirit of maintenance and transformation. We can follow and find our own way to shed preconceptions, rediscovering our proximity to timeless truths and the true beauties on which we once rather shabbily hung our former identities, these notions of ownership and of knowing anything at all.
For that and so much more, thank you John.
I'm touched William. So very glad to see you back to full strength and stretching your typographic and poetic muscles. We are all made better by your presence here.
A beautifully executed modular blackletter with extraordinary filigree around the caps. Usable despite the small character set.
