This is the forum for typographic inspiration and motivation. Many people (including myself!) have FontStructor's block, where they're unable to manifest new ideas for typefaces. This forum is the remedy.

If you are suffering from FontStructor's block or would just like to offer inspiration, motivation, or creative applications of typography, this is your place.

Also: today marks the rollout of forum 2.0, complete with all-new and revamped forums. Stay tuned for more, and be sure to check out all the newly redone forums!

What happened to the Fontstructor? Mine's works
Comment by Isaac González (1saac) 11th august 2013
This is a font Betaport I recently made just for fun. Inspired by beatport's logo. You guys can try making it with fontstructor, or add Uppercase:

Did you do it WITH the fontstructor?
Comment by Isaac González (1saac) 12th august 2013
Oh, no, of course not, you have to work with beziers in fontstructor to achieve that, which I can't. I made it with font creator, nothing special, just imported logo and copy-paste, and it's not actually very accurate.
Comment by kassymkulov 12th august 2013
I'm now working in a clone of the font that Avicii uses in his latest videos. I made it with the Font Creator too (It's also not very accurate)
Comment by Isaac González (1saac) 12th august 2013
@1saac:
Cool! You should hurry up, I have a feeling that you're not the only one who's trying to recreate it, this font's been requested all over the internet :).
Comment by kassymkulov 12th august 2013
Im inspired by Herb Lubalin and all the other great designers out there, but it doesn't really show well in my fonts. Just a little more ligatures.
Comment by Ryan Brotherston (rilencavy) 12th august 2013
I am sometimes inspired by 'unusual' shapes of letters I find in the fonts I download.
Sometimes I am inspired by a plant or animal I see, or by nature photos (specially the close-ups).

But more often I am inspired by a word, situation, name: it invites me to create a font that expresses what I feel or know when hearing the word.

Unfortunately I don't always have the time to build a complete character set so it stays in the initial stage of 'idea' or 'adaptation' - I am one of those fontstructors who "keep private" a lot of fonts simply because they need or deserve more time spent on them than I have available when the inspiration enters my mind. I tend to work on them when I have fontstructor's block ...
Comment by Aeolien 12th august 2013
I've always been inspired by band logos, as well as games, ever since I was a kid. I've designed a few here and there for friends, but I've always loved typography--it's one of the many artistic mediums I like.
Comment by sarreyn 12th august 2013
I'm inspired by moderate and clean fonts that are frequently used. Those inspired me to make beziers.
Comment by Ivy Meadows (Isaiah Garcia) 13th august 2013
I'm usually inspired by music (ok, that's strange XD) It happens to me all of the time that I'm listening to the radio and I can't stop thinking how would the CD cover be like, and what kind of font would go with the music.
Comment by Icelar 13th august 2013
I'm also addicted to any kind of type review (old posters, books, CD's, etc.) But specially Magazines. Oh, magazines, my treasure...

A logo for a translation service I designed using FontStruct. (Not the speech bubble, of course.)

I designed this logo for my company, WDS. Feel free to make a similar logo :)

And doesn't the font used for this guitar pedal look like it was made in FS?
Comment by Noah F. Ross (winty5) 22nd august 2013
What about a little inspiration game? =)

1. Pick randomly two words from the list below.

2.Try to make a fontstruct that has the two features you picked up.

3. Enjoy!

@architaraz: Nice font, but what does mean the "con Dios" (with God) sufix. I'm Spanish but I cannot understand why you added it.

@winty5: WDS is a real company? I'll make a sample!
Comment by Isaac González (1saac) 22nd september 2013
@me: Little fail, "Is WDS a real company?"
Comment by Isaac González (1saac) 22nd september 2013
@1saac: I wanted font's name to contain word VAIO, easier to find, but of course I couldn't name it just VAIO. Vaya almost sounds like Vaio, and I found an old SONY project with the same name. I don't speak Spanish, but I hope it doesn't sound abusive.

hey folks,
does anyone else know this moment, when the lights are dimmed, its about 3 o'clock in the morning and you are totally into the mode of fontstructing anything. Once you take your eyes off the screen, you realize, how tired your eyes are and so it's about adjusting brightness, contrast and so ever on your screen just to make it less "flashing". It ended not seeing the grid anymore enough.
Thats when i thought, it would be cool to have a "night mode" :)
I could imagine it's not a huge challenge to realize this, but i could be totally wrong as well. I'm talking about an inverted view...
Community, how are your thoughts about this?
Comment by kix 1st march 2014
Hmmmm? I guess that might be nature's way of saying "go to bed" :)

My version of this is listening to loud rock/blues on the headphones in the middle of the night and thinking 'maybe I ought to listen to something a bit more calming!'
Comment by p2pnut 1st march 2014
@kix Do you have a Apple device?
Comment by Evie Atarax (j4s13) 2nd march 2014
@1saac: Depends on how u define real :P
It's not like Microsoft or Adobe or something, and it doesn't actually sell anything, so I guess it;s not technically real. You can still design stuff for it if you want.

What is the deal on fonts that are inspired by a logo?

That is, if I can easily recreate the logo using the font, but then go on the "look and feel" to create all the other letters and numbers, and add some similar styled punctuation and symbols, am I in violation of a Copyright because it can recreate a logo?

Or worse, am I setting someone else up for a fall because they might use the font to recreate the logo?

Is it best if I stay away from this type of stuff altogether, or can I make a font that is similar to whatever logo inspired it without being able to recreate the logo (but allow its spirit to shine though)?

Or just no?
Comment by SymbioticDesign 8th june 2014
Don't forget:
Thick, Caption, Book, Display, Semi-Bold, Black, Light, Extra light, etc.
and
Bodoni, Gotham, etc.

Serif, Ligatures and Accents (didn't tell me how to use the 4), Gotham
or
Book serif with ligatures and pairs well with Gotham.
if it were unlimited:
"Texitham is a serif that comes in 4 optical sizes and regular, bold, italic, and bold italic. It pairs well with Gotham, Montserrat, Helvetica, and other similar fonts."

And looks nice in...

A book, an IPad, a computer, on a poster, in a video, on a tattoo, a church, an emergency room, a corporate building, a road sign, on a keyboard.

Also if you want to name a font but can't think up a good name, here are some:

Fullerton
Bootup
Grike
Parenka
Otama
Quixon
Calamit
Endo
Taurus
Octium
Booten
Ponta
Kinata
Makarite

I made up most of these or saw them somewhere.
Comment by Noah F. Ross (winty5) 8th june 2014
@SymbioticDesign: You can freely create a font based off a logo. If it's simply inspiration for your design, then it's still your design. Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that you wish to create a font through inspiration, and are not simply copying another design. If you, say, copied said font without changing any aspect of it, that would be infringement.
Comment by TCWhite 9th june 2014
Thanks. So, since one of my fonts nearly exactly recreates a logo, I need to change it some (the letters in the logo).

Funny thing is that even though I did all the other letters in the spirit of the letters used in the logo, once I started checking things out I realized that they had a totally different idea for those letters.

Looking for fonting ideas I realised that "Fontouts" are a great stimulant and that the last one was long ago. Could we have one for Christmassy fonts? Or general party fonts?

Comment by Aeolien 15th november 2015

I was inspired by Winty's ideas and made a "font" to help people with FontStructors block decide the basic style of a font/: http://fontstruct.com/fontstructions/show/1306186/inspired-font-2 You need to read the font's 'description' to find out how it can be used.
