Dear Friendstructors, so here we are, the final step of my FS Trip begun in march 2010, The TESTAMENT series for my big artbook destined to engrave in marble the ultimate alchemical quintessence of my oeuvre from which the first steps were initiated around 1983!
When last year i developped the AFT series, i thought i was preparing the versions quasi ready to cut and paste, apart from some minor eventual changes, for when i would begin to integrate them in my big Book, but i was wrong : if this was actually the case for some of them , the great majority had to be severely reworked and improved to qualify for the extreme quality i was looking for the Book. So once again hundreds of glyphs had to be redesigned, often in a radical way, but also an extreme attention to small details and subtlety was given (often using advanced composites and stacks for it) for a more "natural" feel of my fonts in text, despite the usual bizarrerie of their esthetics. Some fonts judged now unnecessary or with a not enough strong concept were abandonned, others were put aside waiting to find a better formula worthy of the book. Spacing/Kerning were reajusted in a more "natural" way. A few concepts derivated to something slightly different for a stronger impact. Last, some names were changed in a more accurate way.
I think and believe hard these new TESTAMENT versions at last hit the target i was unconsciously aiming when i signed in Fontstruct in march 2010.... Hope you'll like them.
Even if some people don't understand your work, I find the amount of effort you put into this lifelong project tremendous. Also, your extreme attention to detail and refinement is amazing; in a strange way it's both the exact opposite and very similar to the company Apple with its smooth, minimalistic iPhones, iPads, etc. Congratulations on such an amazing effort.
But does this mean you won't be on FontStruct anymore? I hope you're not leaving for good! :-(
Thanks @ Demonics : as you said it, we're talking of a lifelong effort, now the Testament has overpassed 950 pages in 21 fascicules, but there's no predecided limit, now that the layout process is engaged. And the structure in individual fascicules makes it publishable at any moment and continue on the next one even if it is finalized much later. My health is not that good but i think i can have some years/decades left to continue. Concerning Fontstruct and the typographic part of it, i think i'm far to have finished with it, even when i finish my actual great rewriting phase (until now, about 2/3 have been revised). You'll have to support me some years again. Maybe at some point, typography surely will not be as much at the centre of my activity like now, Testament is not only about fonts, but also avantguarde poetry, digital painting and photograph, more conceptual series, and maybe, i cross digits i have one day the courage to revise and see if i can add an experimental music section out of the hours i have on my old tapes, or if it can not be worthy of the TESTAMENT big project.
