No, no, no, yes, let it be, no. Well, those are the direct answers to your questions. The A you want to create is beautiful, but unfortunately, not possible in FontStruct at this point. You could try using the Filters under the Advanced menu to give you some extended rounded corners. However, since you are using the 45 degree angle bricks, there is just no way to get the rounded corners with those...yet. If you try to force the system into what it wasn't designed to do, well, you might stumble onto something unexpected and interesting, but not really get what you wanted initially. You just have to work with the limitations and make them work for you. If you really wanted to get what you set out to do, you could do the basic work in FontStruct and polish it in FontLab's TypeTool or some other external font editing program. Then again, if you are going to use TypeTool for anything beyond kerning or metrics modification to a fontstruction, you might as well create the glyphs in Illustrator to begin with [sorry Team FontStruct]. There is a very nice chapter in the FontLab's Studio manual (available to download for free!) that explains how to setup Illustrator so that transferring between Illustrator and Studio 5 is seamless.

Welcome to the challenging/ frustrating/ liberating/ exhilarating world of FontStruct. You can learn quite a lot about FontStruct by reading the "comments" feed on particular FontStructors/fonts. Go to Willaum's page to find out about brick stacking, which helps you get around some of the brick-intersect problems. Quite a few of my fonts have bleats from me about trying to achieve curves so go to my page and have a look for the ones with discussions. Brick scaling is a good thing to know about. It's in the "advanced/view/filters" tab when you're FontStructing. A scale of 2x2 will give you more flexible xy points for placement of bricks. (But it does take a bit of getting used to figuring out how the scaled bricks work -- all part of the fun.) Happy 'Structing.
