Since I've learned so much from others before, I thought it would be proper to share my experiences with perfect candor. It might give you the morsel of information you need should you thread the path of voxel font creation.

It took me a long time to realize this idea, too long. First I drew sketches on triangle grid paper. (http://incompetech.com/graphpaper/triangle) Once I was happy with the glyphs I moved to the next stage: Fontstruct. After successfully designed the cube primitive, I
tested different patterns for the best shades of grey. It took me 2 days, and I had a lot of fun with those cubes. Then, I started to create the glyphs from a-z using the sketches as maps. I also made vertical and horizontal rulers to count the bricks easier. I thought it will be a simple copy-and-paste operation afterwards, but no. In a triangular mesh things are more complicated than in square-land. In some cases the cubes happened to fall in place half a brick upward shifted. That means different set and/or sequence of bricks. So I created another cube primitive shifted by half a brick up. Sometimes the patterns ended
with white squares or stripes on the edge. To fix this I had to create more primitives, as much as 12 permutations. At that point I gave up, and resorted to hand editing in such cases. After a few glyphs the
whole file size grew so big, that poor flash player could barely cope with. Fontstructor became very unresponsive with lots of time lags. Most of the time the pointer was slowly
hovering above, I could hardly control it. I'm sure it doesn't sound unfamiliar for most of
you. Or does it? I could create only 2-4 glyphs a day, not counting the smaller ones, such as the comma, grave, or period. Finally, I made a few optical adjustments, adding to or chipping away a few half bricks here and there. Yes, I have cheated, and violated my own rules so as to maximize the visual impact. They are mostly imperceptible, but without them you
would notice that something is not okay. So that's how I wasted my time with FS, but I don't feel any guilt or repentence. :))

You may have stretched FS to it's maximum, but the results are more than worth it.
