Very impressive. This looks like just the sort of fence Tom Sawyer was whitewashing. I would have begged him to let me paint it for a short while.
great idea!
I totally dig the board feeling and the nail detail.
plus you bought me easily with the samples.
Excellent.
Extremely effective usage, I'd say. Great samples.
Very impressive. Looks very usable as well.
Wow thanks guys, to be honest I'm a little shocked (in a good way) that everyone likes it.
I'm not a huge fan of gimmicky display fonts that have narrow usage, but I can only guess that you see something different with this one. Although I am very pleased with the first sample, and the client loves it, so I guess it's a good job.
Unlike my own, what I love about your body of work is the care given to make the fonts as usable as possible, within the confines of the design limitations, of course. Good job.
I suggest making the space character a blank back-of-the-fence character (the two supporting horizontal braces) so that the fence is continuous even when not.
@ Thalamic. Great comment. I did try that initially, but after usage testing it left no option for the designer to separate the words.
So I had it as an option using the "{" & "}" keys. Also there's a gate in the "\" key, and a few decorative End Posts in the "[]" and "|" keys.
i'm seeing the word usability a lot. if and when the voting system is modified it would be good to be able to vote on the usability of a font. as a designer how do you really determine if a font is usable? you can use it, but do you know if or how someone else will or how much? does a font's dl number indicate usability or are downloaders primarily font collectors? just like citing the "limitations of fs," i have similar reaction to "usability." do 100 people using a font make it inherently more useful than if 1 person uses another? isn't that 1 person's use just as important as the others. and in the end isn't it just a font - at best a fleeting joy, but totally disposable. as a designer, i criticize myself a lot during the design process to ensure my decisions create the best font i can for what i'm trying to do. does that always translate to success with something being usable? no. should that determine if i should even create the font because someone may not use it? no. should it be a consideration in the design process - no, at least not for me. i have enough to think about when designing a font. but i guess like beauty, usability is in the eye of the beholder :)
oh btw, great job :) one of my first was a picket fence, but yours really takes the concept to a much more professional and commercial level. congrats.
For me, if the font has very limited or almost no usage, then what's the point! If no-one is going to use it, then why bother?
In my book it's ALL about the usability. The more usability the better it is.
I only spend my hard earned money on fonts I can use.
As a Graphic designer, I use fonts everyday. The majority are legible, clean and precise. I tend to veer away from specialist "Christmas" or Valentine" fonts, or quirky one-offs you find on the FREE FONTS websites. They simply look naff and cheap. Yes they have their usage, I just don't like them. You could have any font, and cover it with snowflakes. Hey presto a Christmas Font!
If a font does have limited usage, then I think a good quality sample should always be shown. This will show the viewer exactly what you had in mind when you designed it.
The sample for me, is always a challenge. I try to show the font off to the best of it's ability - how I imagined it being used when I created it.

Great stuff ... youv'e really nailed this one :)
The first sample is easily one of the best samples I've ever seen at fontstruct. It's very well rendered. Do you own the rights on the background image? I'd like have this in poster size.
Thanks guys.
@ Saberrider. I bought the image from iStock, so I can use it as I wish, what's your plan. Do you want me to send you the large version?

Hoorah, I finally get my first FEATURED DOWNLOAD. Thanks to everyone.
Congrats! Well deserved... :) The first sample is killer btw. First I couldn't make any sense of "conquest to achieving out dreams only assist us in our we...", but then I realised my reading habits might be a bit too small minded. :P
I got my second Featured Download in a row after a yearlong existence in the anonymity of mediocrity. Weirdly enough though, people still haven't recognized me in the street when I went to university today. :P
Nice one nippa :-)
